Beth Dichter's insight:

As an educator do you think of yourself as a design thinker? This visual by Jackie Gerstein shows how you impact your class and focuses on some of the areas we should consider as we design curriculum and work with students in our classrooms. You will also find links to a number of additional resources, including a great toolkit put out by IDEO that is geared to teachers in K-12.

Empathy: A Top Skill of the Effective (and Loving) Educator

Empathy: A Top Skill of the Effective (and Loving) Educator | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Learning is a result of listening, which in turn leads to even better listening and attentiveness to the other person. In other words, to learn from the child, we must have empathy, and empathy gro...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Have you considered how empathy may be an important component of your classroom? Should it be a "concern of educators"? Should it be "intentionally used as a primary instructional strategy?"

This post looks at these questions and provides a number of definitions for empathy as well as benefits of empathy in teaching and learning. There is also an excellent short animated video from RSA Shorts - The Power of Empathy.

What Does ‘Design Thinking’ Look Like in School? | MindShift

What Does ‘Design Thinking’ Look Like in School? | MindShift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Design thinking can seem a bit abstract to teachers. It’s not part of traditional teacher training programs and has only recently entered the teachers’ vernacular.

Design thinking is an approach to learning that includes considering real-world problems, research, analysis, conceiving original ideas, lots of experimentation, and sometimes building things by hand. But few schools have the time or wherewithal to integrate these processes into the school day."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Why would we ask students to learn design thinking? Perhaps because the concept of "considering real-world problems, research analysis..." (as quoted above) is called for in the Common Core. Based on my readings it plays hand in hand with the Maker Faire movement that is growing. This post in valuable because it discusses how a school is putting design thinking into practice, providing great tips as you read.

And if you are thinking of trying some design thinking yourself you should check out the website Design Thinking for Educators (http://www.designthinkingforeducators.com/) and download their free toolkit which "contains the process and methods of design along with the Designer’s Workbook, adapted specifically for the context of K-12 education." This toolkit has been updated and is now version 2.

Design Thinking For Students: The Question Formulation Technique

Design Thinking For Students: The Question Formulation Technique | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

This past summer Edutopia, IDEO, and Riverdale County School sponsored a "Design Thinking for Educators" online course that quickly was over enrolled. Lucky for us that the folks at ASIDE were participants and have shared this post that will help us learn design thinking. The post provides many links to resources that will teach you about design thinking. If you are not sure of what design thinking is this post describes it as "the posing of a problem, perhaps elegantly framed but more likely ill-structured or open-ended -- and with some constraints."

Collaborative whiteboard for visual methodologies - TUZZit

Collaborative whiteboard for visual methodologies - TUZZit | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
TUZZit is a online collaborative whiteboard that will help you to develop your creativity. It's the perfect tool for visual and design thinking. Through our canvas library learn new visual methodolgies.
Beth Dichter's insight:

TUZZit is a new tool to me and it is free. If you find that many of your students are visual learners take some time to check out this tool. One feature that many may find helpful is the library of "canvases" that provide structure for a wide variety of projects. Most of these are more geared to business but you can also create your own canvas. Other features include inserting images and videos and creating post-it notes. Larry Ferlazzo, who led me to this tool states "In some ways it seems like an Exploratree on steroids." If you are planning on collaborating on a project consider testing this tool with your colleagues.

Hacking the Classroom: Beyond Design Thinking

Hacking the Classroom: Beyond Design Thinking | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Design Thinking is a great skill for students to acquire as part of their education.  But it is one process like the problem-solving model or the scientific method. As a step-by-step process, it becomes type of box.  Sometimes we need to go beyond that box; step outside of the box. This post provides an overview of design thinking, the problems with design thinking, and suggestions to hacking the world to go beyond design thinking."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you are looking for a variety of information on Design Thinking this post is for you. Gestein share many resources including:

* An Introduction to Design Thinking, a Facilitator's Guide with a script, talking points, takeaways, and set-up considerations (available from Scribd)

* A slideshare presentation "Design is hacking how we learn (presented at AIGA Into the Woods 2012)

* links to a variety of articles, including "The d.school's Virtual Crash Course of Design Thinking"

She also discusses some of the problems with Design Thinking, once again providing links several articles. She shares views from people in business who have turned Design Thinking " into a linear, gated, by-the-book methodology that delivered, at best, incremental change and innovation." She expresses concerns that this may also happen in education.

The final section of her post looks at hacking, but with a different flavor than we often read. A number of definitions of hacking are provided and one is below:

"In developing hacking as a skill, an attitude, and/or as an approach to construct and de-construct the world, it is more than just hacking in terms of computer science.  In order to hack the world, we need to tear it apart, deconstruct it and analyze its components parts and how they operate in relation to one another within various systems.  This is a mental, social, emotional, and whenever possible, a physical process."

Challenge yourself to read this post. Chances are you will come away with some new ideas.

This website has useful information for teachers and students about design thinking and interpretation. It looks at many elements of design and how to approach design in relation to technology. This website is helpful to give teachers some stepping stones and guidance as to where to go with design and technology.

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
RSA Animate recently released a video called 'The Power of Outrospection'. The video intrigued me and this post has helped me pull together some of my thoughts about the links between empathy and creativity.
The post explores empathy in a variety of fields, including design, human services, and the creative fields, and the video is also embedded in the post. Take the opportunity to read the post, watch the video, and ponder how empathy allows us to be creative as we look for new solutions for whatever issues we face.
