Big news from Getty Images —Educators Embed Many Images for Free | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Getty Images’ new embed tool is huge news for those of us who look for great images to use in teaching, digital storytelling and presentation.

Why huge?

We’re talking 35 million photographs. Up until right now, over the course of years, some folks paid serious money for the use of this art.  Other folks have not."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This is amazing news for teachers and students...access to phenomenal images at no cost. Joyce Valenza provides an excellent overview of how to use the website and the background to this decision. Learn more from the post and then head over to Getty Images and have fun exploring.

Citing an Image is Not Enough!

Citing an Image is Not Enough! | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
I am thrilled to see so many students creating blog posts and going BEYOND "writing" text made up letters, words, sentences and paragraphs. Being able to "read" and "write" in other media is part o...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Yet there is still the issue that students are citing images without checking to see if they have the correct permissions to do so. Students (and teachers) need to be aware of copyright rules. Using resources like Flickr you will find many pictures but students need to learn how check to see if the image is under Creative Commons and accurately site the source.

Langwitch does an excellent job explaining a situtation that she experienced with her students and provides screenshots to help you understand what to look for. Teaching students how to cite resources is teaching our students media literacy.

Consider having your students create an image that they could put under Create Commons and have attibuted to them of others were to use it.

Beth Dichter's insight:

Are you interested in learning more about US copyright law for educators (and also for those in Australia) or how to find and adapt Creative Common materials for you class? These two classes (and others) are being offered at the School of Open through P2PU. There are also courses that you may take any time. For the courses mentioned above you must register by Sunday, March 17th and they begin next week. The others are available at any time.

Many schools are beginning to look at using open source materials, and if you search this Scoop.it you will find quite a few resources about open source materials, but these are the first classes I have seen that are geared to educators around issues that we should educate ourselves if we are going to be going in the direction of open source. If you have the time consider signing up for one of the classes.

Copyright Flowchart: Can I Use It? Yes? No? If This... Then... | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
It is the responsibility of all educators to model good digital citizenship for their students. Especially when it comes to copyright, plagiarism and intellectual property. The waters are murky. No...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Teaching teachers and students about copyright and asking them to respect intellectual property is not an easy task, but it is critical that we teach students that plagiarism is not acceptable (and that we follow the same rules). This infographic provides one way for teachers and students to determine what they may do and also provides information on how you may take material you have created and either place it under Creative Commons or choose to copyright the work.

Beth Dichter's insight:

Today we want our students to create, yet we know they do this by remixing and reusing "intellectual property" from others. Do they understand the need to give credit where credit is due. This toolkit provides a wide range of resources to help them make the correct decision (or to help you teach them how to make that decision). Sections include:

* What is Creative Commons?
* How to find Creative Commons content? Remember, content may include images, audio, video and YouTube (as examples). This section is quite robust in providing access to many resources, including portal for music, images and video as well as favorite sources for images and sounds.

* What do those Creative Commons License icons mean?

* Creative Commons licenses are for you too! What if your students create content and license it under Creative Commons?

* Public Domain resources

* Fair Use

* And more!

This is a great resource that is probably best for older students but the resources will guide you to locations that you may use with younger students also.

A Good Collection of 13 Digital Citizenship Resources

A Good Collection of 13 Digital Citizenship Resources | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Jen Deyenberg at Northern Gateway Public Schoolshas created a nice collection of digital citizenship resources for teachers and parents. The collection is organized into sections for elementary school, middle school, and high school. There is a separate tab for parent resources. One of the things that I like about the collection is that understanding copyright has been included as part of digital citizenship."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you teach digital citizenship in any grade from preK to 12 the site that Richard Byrne discusses is worth checking out. The resources are organized by age (as in elementary, middle years, high school) and there are parent resources as well as resources on copyright and ones for teachers. Each resource is described and with a click you can arrive at the destination!

CurieSPK1's curator insight, April 7, 2013 12:23 AM
