3 Best Free Flashcard Apps for Students | Edudemic

3 Best Free Flashcard Apps for Students | Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"According to an article on Time.com about the best and worst learning techniques, active learning methods (e.g. writing) are far more useful for long-term retention than passive learning methods (e.g. highlighting or underline words).

One of the best ways? Surprisingly enough: flashcards, according to research from the Association of Psychological Science."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Brain research has shown that recalling information is one of the best ways to learn. What better way to recall information than to use flashcards. This post, from Edudemic, shares three flashcards apps. It provides information on each, sharing features and providing a conclusion that may lead you to prefer one app over another.

Share this information with your students. Consider challenging them to create a set of flashcards that others could use to review.

Blooms, SAMR & the 3 C's - iSupport | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

All the iPad apps you'll ever need. Aligned to Blooms Taxonomy and SAMR

Beth Dichter's insight:

Do you use iPads in your school? Do you work with Bloom's Taxonomy and/or SAMR? Are you interested in seeing how you might combine Bloom's and SAMR using specific apps? If so, click through to this post.

The post takes apps and organizes in three categories:

* Consumption - which includes Knowledge and Analysis (split into Activity and Gamification)

* Collaboration - which includes Application and Synthesis (split into Assessment and Cloud Storage)

* Creation - which includes Comprehension and Evaluate (split into Multimedia & Design and Multimedia Texts)

Then read on and see how you might take these same areas and apply them to SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition).

This is worth a look even if you do not have iPads. The ideas of placing work into the three Cs of Consumption, Collaboration and Creation may be applied to work that students do, with or without technology.

A Detailed Visual Guide To Distributed Project-Based Learning - Edudemic

A Detailed Visual Guide To Distributed Project-Based Learning - Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
In an effort to help those teachers out, Katie and I found a fabulous new visual diagram that's all about which apps and tools go with the different parts of distributed project-based learning.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic looks at Project Based Learning (PBL) and divides it into three main sections:

* Organize and co-ordinate work

* Build background knowledge & inspire

* Co-design *making*

The second and third areas are then decided to more clearly deliniate the areas each covers. The last final two sections provide more specific concepts of what it required and also one or more suggestions of tech tools that will assist the process. There are additional groupings as shown in the infographic above.

More and more teachers are engaging in some form of PBL and this visual may serve as a great base to help create a strong foundation and provide ideas of technology tools that might assist in the process.

http://www.edudemic.com/a-detailed-visual-guide-to-distributed-project-based-learning/

I really like this resources because it shows where students are getting information for their projects.  The projects are learned through resources that are distributed across many different fields, websites, and search engines.  This allows students to engage in many different types of content curation sites.  Google and skype are a few examples of resources.  The visual is broken up into instant learning and coalitious segments showing how some sites are good for overlapping purposes.  This is an interesting view of PBL sources.

Google Drive’s new very appy Create menu — NeverEndingSearch

Google Drive’s new very appy Create menu — NeverEndingSearch | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"It’s just a little easier to find your apps these days and to discover and connect to new ones.

On Friday Google announced a new feature in its Drive interface.  The Create menu now expands to list a lovely variety of  third-party Drive-connected apps.  These apps may now be conveniently added to your Create menu in a list to the right of the official Google Apps–documents, presentations, spreadsheets, forms, and drawings.

You may either search for the apps you want to list or browse for them in a pull-down menu.  After you connect them, they are loaded directly from your Drive."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you are using Google Drive this is welcome news. Once you click on the Create button you click on the Connect More Apps and are taken to the App store where you may search by category (perhaps education and productivity would be on the top of the list for educators). Click on one you want available and it will ask you to Connect...and lickety split it shows up in your Drive interface!

Beth Dichter's insight:

One look at how iPads may be used in the classroom with suggestions of apps to use. Some additional apps are suggested in the post with explanations on why you might choose to use them. All to often when rolling out new tools teachers become overwhelmed. This diagram was developed with the author stating: "The point is that less than 15 apps can be a starting point for learning, with the substitution of applications based on the learner’s needs and educator’s requirements."

Nicole Kotoski's curator insight, April 1, 2014 10:56 PM

Ipads are a great tool to use in the classroom when they are used correctly. Just using the IPad does not mean that we are integrating technology into our classes we need to use it as a tool in learning. A tool that supports students to think creatively and to collaboratively. Apps are plentiful and using the SAMR model as educators we will be able to integrate the right apps into the classroom. Just using keynote does not mean that we are allowing our students to design the wheel, we have taken a step into integrating technology but we have not taken a leap. We have modified a task that students have done previously. Dependent on learning goals and achievement and learners own abilities will depend on the apps you use. I will certainly be taking the SAMR model into consideration when using apps in the classroom.

Karen Barlow's comment, April 11, 2014 6:44 AM
ipads are a great tool to incorporate the higher levels of the SAMR model into learning. The best part is that it is easy and the payoff particularly when you get to the modification and redirection levels. Whilst it is easy to use ipads as a substitution and augmentation they are an easy and great way to incorporate interactive tasks into learning.
