The Lure of a Challenge - Lure of the Labyrinth: a web-based math game

The Lure of a Challenge - Lure of the Labyrinth: a web-based math game | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Now this is cool: FableVision Studios and MIT’s Education Arcade have issued a challenge to middle grade students and teachers: Between now and June 15th, use the web-based game Lure of the Labyrinth to improve student engagement and math instruction and not only will you enjoy a great game, but you’ll also help advance research gaming and the instructional process—and you might win some prizes! Lure of the Labyrinth...integrates standards-based math curriculum taking educational gaming to a new level where gaming is not used as a reward for completing a task but where gaming is the task...leverages the energy, creativity and commitment children have for video gaming while improving math and problem-solving skills."

The Algebra Problem - How to Elicit Algebra Thinking Before 8th Grade

The Algebra Problem - How to Elicit Algebra Thinking Before 8th Grade | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"It’s Crazy Hair Day at Marshall Elementary School in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood—which is perfect, because Tufts University researcher Bárbara Brizuela has brought a hat.

In the stovepipe style and made from oaktag paper, the hat is one foot tall. Brizuela then asks, “If I’m five and a half feet tall, how tall will I be with the hat on?” Second-grader Jasmine, smiley in a pink sweatsuit, answers, “Six and a half feet.” Rather than say, “Right!” Brizuela offers another question: “How do you know?”

Thus begins a math conversation that researchers like Brizuela believe may hold the key to tackling one of our biggest school bugaboos: algebra."

The Fischbowl: Don't Fear Failure

The Fischbowl: Don't Fear Failure | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"One of the problems I think we have in schools is that we train students to fear failure, to avoid it at all costs. Now, to be clear, I'm not suggesting you go out and fail all your classes. But I am suggesting that you should take some risks in your learning. That instead of avoiding things that are hard (because you might fail), you challenge yourself to step up and take on things that are difficult."

This also includes a TEDtalk by Myshkin Ingawale. The site states "The important point to realize is that he built this device - and it failed. So then he built it 32 more times until it worked."
