Introduction to the SAMR Model Video | Common Sense Media

Introduction to the SAMR Model Video | Common Sense Media | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Dr. Ruben Puentedura developed the SAMR model as a way for teachers to evaluate how they are incorporating technology into their instructional practice. You can use SAMR to reflect upon how you are integrating technology into your classroom."

Beth Dichter's insight:

There are many models one can look to when integrating technology into the curriculum and one that is often spoken about is SAMR. SAMR allows teachers to learn how to move from enhancing curriculum to transforming curriculum.

Think of climbing a ladder.

The bottom rung of the ladder would be substitution.

The second step would be modification.

The third step would be augmentation.

The fourth step would be redefinition.

The video takes an example and shows how it changes as it moves up the ladder.

There are also a number of reflection questions provided that may help you understand how to evaluate each of the areas and move your students to use more high order thinking skills (HOTS) as well as impact student achievement.

There are many videos available that explain SAMR. This one does an excellent job and provides some extra tips...and it in just over 4 minutes in length!

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
We don’t want iPads to just become replacements for notebooks and textbooks, we want them to be objects to think with. We want students using them to mess around with the world around them and their courses of study.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This is the third post (in a series of four) by Justin Reich exploring “the future of tablets in education. The first post in this series describes a “Someday/Monday template” stating:

“For technology to make a real difference in student learning, it can’t just be an add-on. On the other hand, teachers need to start somewhere (Monday), and one of the easiest ways for teachers to get experience with emerging tools is to play and experiment in lightweight ways: to use technology as an add-on. Teachers need to imagine a new future—to build towards Someday—and teachers also need new activities and strategies to try out on Monday.” (Quoted from: http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2013/05/the-future-of-tablets-in-education-potential-vs-reality/.)

This third post explores creation, “examining what is possible when we empower students and teachers as innovators with their iPds and other mobile devices.
Rather than having students use their devices as replacements for netbooks/computers/textbooks allow them to use them to create something new, or using the SAMR model, as tools that provide the ability to redefine, to think. The post shares a number of examples of what is happening in classrooms that have made the shift from Monday to Someday.

This post provides links to the first post, which explores “The Future of Tablets in Education: Potential vs. Reality of Consuming Media” (consumption) and the second which explores “To Get the Most Out of Tablets, Use Smart Curation” (curation).

Kimberly House's curator insight, July 28, 2013 6:16 AM

This couldn't ring more true! The first post in this series talks about how teachers need to go through the iPad as an 'add-on' stage. We've found this to be true at our school and there is so much value in recognising this stage as valid. Getting to the stage where teachers and students use the iPad to create and transform learning takes time. Allowing for this time will help ensure an effective iPad programme. We've also realised that having lead teachers across the school there for support and guidance helps teachers considerably as they move through those early phased in their iPad development.

Using SAMR to Teach Above the Line

Using SAMR to Teach Above the Line | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
The SAMR model is a useful tool for helping teachers think about their own tech use as they begin to make small shifts in the design and implementation of technology driven learning experiences t...
Beth Dichter's insight:

The SAMR model is one tool to use. The letters stand for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification. Redefinition. This post explores how you can use the SAMR model in the classroom, with the focus on the US constitution and connect the project to Common Core. At each step of the SAMR ladder Susan Oxnevad provides "Dr. Puentedura’ Questions and Transitions for guidance." (Dr. Puentedura is the creator of the SAMR model).

The SAMR model is a great tool to use with teachers new to technology. It provides a scaffolding that will assist them as they gain new technology skills. This lesson provides a great overview and could be modified for lessons in other disciplines.

Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster

Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

If the SAMR model is new to you here is a brief explanation of the four letters that make it up:

S- Substitution - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change.
A - Augmentation - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement.
M- Modification - Tech allows for significant task redesign.
R - Redefinition - Tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.

The SAMR Model begins with Substitution (as in read the poster from the bottom up to more clearly understand the model), moving to Augmentation, then Modification and finishing with Redefinition.

The SAMR model is the work of Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D. from M.I.T. For more information on the SAMR model check out his website at http://hippasus.com/rrpweblog/.

For an indepth look you may want to check out the presentation from August 23, 2012 with the title "The SAMR Model: Background and Exemplars."

Shannon Soger's curator insight, January 7, 2014 7:46 PM

Great poster, but it's important to note that what you're doing with the app will depend what SAMR level the lesson is. Keynote CAN be at Modification, but it can also be used as Substitution. For example, if a student is typing an "About Me" slide in Keynote, the technology is simply acting as a direct tool with no functional change in the task. However, if a student created an "About Me" presentation in Keynote that contained Photo Booth pictures of his/her family, and video of a family tradition that would bring the lesson to Modification. The student could not have "brought his/family" into his presentation without the use of the technology.

SAMR: Augmenting your Creativity & Amplifying your Curiosity | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:
This post provides a wide range of resources that discuss SAMR, a model that looks at how technology may impact education and transform the classroom as the technology moves from being a direct tool substitute with with no real change to augmentation, where there is some functional improvement to modification providing redesign opportunities to redefinition, moving to new ways to accomplish new tasks. Learn more about SAMR in this post which includes a talk that Dr. Ruben presented at an iPad conference and many other resources that provide additional information about SAMR.

Beth Dichter's insight:

"SAMR is a great framework for thinking about technology and how it can best be used in a teaching environment to bring about transformational learning opportunities that wouldn't have been possible without the technology."

If SAMR is new to you the letters stand for:
Substitution

Augmentation

Modification

Redefinition

This visual from Mark Anderson does a great job providing an overview of SAMR as well as transformative level activities. To go the actual link pdf: http://ictevangelist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/SAMR-flow-chart.pdf.

SAMR devient aussi en francophonie un modèle bien accepté. Ca vaut la peine d'en tenir compte dans la construction de dispositifs.

I cant even begin to describe how the concept of SAMR changed my teaching perspective. I was stuck at SA level. But now so many improvements in my teaching approaches.
