The Use of Social Media in School

The Use of Social Media in School | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Teachers and schools are attempting to leverage the engaging qualities of social media for use in the classroom and beyond.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic explores the use of social media in schools. We know that teenagers (and tweens) are actively engaged with social media. As educators how can we leverage this use and bring it into our classrooms. We know our students are actively using this technology outside of school...so why do so many schools ban it? This post explores reasons why we should look at this issue.

The infographic is divided into a number of sections.

* If You can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em - Social Networking Stats

* Benefits of Social Media in the Classroom - a look at Student Benefits, Educator Benefits and Parental Benefits

* Examples of Social Media in the Classroom: Looking at Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Blogging

* Social Media Pilot Program: Learn about a program in Portland, Oregon and the difference it made

Resources are also provided at the bottom of the infographic.

Jessica Trcka's curator insight, November 8, 2013 3:58 PM

Social Media is a very major topic that needs to be addressed in the health classroom. Students need to become aware of safety issues that may arise when using Social Media. This document reflects how Social Media is being utilized in the perspective of the teacher and student. Students should read this document and highlight and underline the main points and be prepared for a discussion about the topic of Social Media in the classroom.

E-Curriculum… 7 Key Tools Uncovering A Goldmine of E-Resources

E-Curriculum… 7 Key Tools Uncovering A Goldmine of E-Resources | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Everyone is talking about a digital curriculum free of  those hard copy textbooks that have been a part of schooling since the advent of the one room schoolhouse. In this series I will investigate ...
Beth Dichter's insight:

More and more sites provide access to e-curriculum. Here is a list from Michael Gorman that explores the following sites:
* Symbaloo, a site that allows you to create web mixes. Please note that Symbaloo has a educational version and a non-educational version. It is worth checking out both versions.

* Diigo, a site that allows you to store bookmarks, tag them and more.

* Livebinders - think of a 3-ring binder but online and you get the idea.

* My Big Campus - a safe social learning platform for students. There is a paid version and a freemium version.

* Scoop.it - a great tool for curation.

* Pinterest - many great educational resources can be found.

* Educlipper - this tool is similar to Pinterest but designed for educators.

There is much more information on each of these tools in this post and well worth the read. Have fun exploring!

New Teachers Hub on Pinterest

New Teachers Hub on Pinterest | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"A pinspiring place for teachers to find and share creative ideas. Follow these boards for lesson plans, classroom decor and lots more for lively learning."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Pinterest has become a great location to find educational sources, and now they have launched a teachers hub. Currently they are boards that share information for grades PreK through Grade 6 (one board per grade) as well as boards for Art, Science, Math, Classroom Decor, Classroom Management, Home  School, Literacy, Sensory Learning, Gold Star Supplies, Back to School and Educational Blogs.

For more information on this new feature you may travel over to the Pinterest Blog where they posted "Say Hello to Pinterest" at http://blog.pinterest.com/post/58175180377/say-hello-to-teachers-on-pinterest

The current boards are for elementary school but the post also notes that they will "work together with Edutopia—an online resource for educators—to build out the education-focused community on Pinterest."

If you are looking for lesson plans, ideas for your classroom, and more it is worth checking out this resource.

The Teacher Treasury's comment, August 22, 2013 1:54 AM

Ricard Garcia's curator insight, June 11, 2013 4:23 AM

Pinterest is a vast source of possibilities for the classroom... here's a good article with different ways to make the best of it.

AlGonzalezinfo's curator insight, June 21, 2013 6:56 AM

This is a great example of how to use the Infographic format to educate and share knowledge with others.  It make sense that a teacher would do it.  Fantastic!

Audrey's curator insight, March 8, 2014 5:38 PM

Once you start using these two learning strategies teaching becomes a real pleasure as students will be teaching the topics.  In addition they will be able to give evaluative and analytical commentary.

How Educators Are Using Learnist

How Educators Are Using Learnist | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Learnist, as many have already pointed out, works much like Pinterest — a way to catalog online resources on a topic and share them with the user’s social network. And like Pinterest, it looks like a digital bulletin board with pictures and messages, and connects with Facebook accounts. In fact, the site’s “learning boards” look quite a bit like Facebook’s timeline feature, and Facebook membership is required to use Learnist at this point."

Currently in beta you may find that if you request membership you will receive an invitation. In the meantime you may explore some of the information that has been posted by others.
