Newsela Free Summer Reading Challenge

Newsela Free Summer Reading Challenge | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"For those many kids who choose not to read books, for those kids who are news junkies, for those kids who choose to focus on nonfiction, for those kids who read everything anyway, and for those kids who are motivated by regular, tangible rewards, Newsela’s Free Summer Reading Challenge may be just the thing to engage students with the world, while attacking potential summer reading slump."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you haven't had a chance to check out the website Newsela this may be a great opportunity to take a look at it and share it with students (if you have an easy way to access them).

Newsela provides news at five reading lexiles, from Grade 3 or 4 through Grade 12. When you log in there will be a choice of articles to choose from. After reading you may choose to take a quiz.

Although this challenge has started you may still sign up. The post provides additional details and links to the website.

Newsela - Build Reading Comprehension with News

Newsela - Build Reading Comprehension with News | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Read closely. Think critically. Be worldly.

Beth Dichter's insight:

Newsela is a free website that provides news for students. It is geared to students in grades 4 - 12 and will help students build close reading and critical thinking skills in non-fiction reading comprehension.
Articles are written at multiple levels of compexity. It appears that the levels begin around 690 and go up to just over 1200.

Each article has a quiz (aligned to Common Core) allowing you to quickly see if your students are on track.

And last there are great teacher tools. You may assign articles, review student quizzes and track Common Core mastery.

Jackie Keith's curator insight, June 19, 2013 8:31 AM

Students can use it without registering by clicking "No Thanks" and can select different Lexile versions of the same article.

Counting Down the Top S'Cool Tools for 2013: #11-20

Counting Down the Top S'Cool Tools for 2013: #11-20 | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
In the early days of TRL on MTV, top ten music video countdown lists ruled supreme. Everybody likes a list, right? But here at EdSurge, we don’t geek out at music videos; we geek out at edtech tools
Beth Dichter's insight:

EdSurge is releasing their top 20 "S'Cool Tools" for 2013 and this list provides us with the tools from 11 - 20. The range of tools is wide. A quick explanation on some are below with more information in the post as well as links to each of them.

* NewsELA is a website that provides students access to articles written at different lexiles, starting with Grade 3 or 4 and moving through Grade 12. It is free and you can create a classroom account and also assign articles to be read. Some (but not all) of the articles have quizzes attached that ask questions based on Common Core and you will be able to see the results. Questions are different for each reading lexile.

* EdWeb is a professional and social networking that provides a wealth of resources including free webinars. It is a great tool to help improve teaching and learning.

* Timelapse provides you a look at what is happening based on satellite photography taken over the last 30 years.

Click through to the post to explore these tools and seven others...and stay tuned for the release of the top ten!
