Google DRIVE Cheat Sheet

Google DRIVE Cheat Sheet | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Google Drive continues to add new resources and at times it is confusing for folks to know where to go. This three page document provides you with a great visual of all the components you find when you log-in to Google Drive as well as an additional two pages that share Keyboard short-cuts as well as some other tips. One tip that was new to me is:

* Google Drive file types (docs, sheets, slides, etc.) DO NOT count against your Drive storage space.

This site will also lead you to a Google document that has this information that you may save in your Google Drive.

Digital Annotation Tools For Close Reading

Digital Annotation Tools For Close Reading | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"One of the components of Close Reading is annotation, in which the students read short, complex text adding annotations as they read. Students might circle words or phrases that are powerful, underline those that are confusing, indicate big events or when a character shows strong emotion, and write questions or thoughts. They use metacognitive markers or “Thinking Notes” as a means to move beyond just highlighting..."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Close Reading covers a wide range of materials: poems, news articles, short stories, plays, photos, paintings,  videos and more. This post provides five tools to help students annotate a wide variety of media. They are listed below, More detailed explanations are found in the post.

* Doctopus - this program is great if you use Google Apps (and therefore Google Drive).

* Diigo is a great tool for annoting text and images found online. Drawing tools are also available.

* Markup does not require an account. "It provides tools for drawing, highlighting, adding text, and sharing via a link. It does require the installation of a bookmarklet or the Chrome extension."

* PDFzen is a free tool that works with Google Drive. It will open the following types of files: pdf, doc, docx, xls, xlx, odt and rtf.

* VideoAnt allows you to annotate  videos hosted on YouTube as well as HTML5 and flash videos and works in a number of browsers.

As we begin to prepare our students for new testing the ability to annotate is critical. These tools provide a variety of options that you may want to explore and use in your classroom.

Google Drive’s new very appy Create menu — NeverEndingSearch

Google Drive’s new very appy Create menu — NeverEndingSearch | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"It’s just a little easier to find your apps these days and to discover and connect to new ones.

On Friday Google announced a new feature in its Drive interface.  The Create menu now expands to list a lovely variety of  third-party Drive-connected apps.  These apps may now be conveniently added to your Create menu in a list to the right of the official Google Apps–documents, presentations, spreadsheets, forms, and drawings.

You may either search for the apps you want to list or browse for them in a pull-down menu.  After you connect them, they are loaded directly from your Drive."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you are using Google Drive this is welcome news. Once you click on the Create button you click on the Connect More Apps and are taken to the App store where you may search by category (perhaps education and productivity would be on the top of the list for educators). Click on one you want available and it will ask you to Connect...and lickety split it shows up in your Drive interface!
