Create a Word Cloud Within Your Google Documents

Create a Word Cloud Within Your Google Documents | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Once upon a time there was a Google Spreadsheets script that would create word clouds for you. When the new (current) version of Google Spreadsheets was launched that script stopped working. This morning I found a replacement for that old script."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you or your students use Google Docs they can quickly generate a word cloud when their document has 100 or more words. Richard Byrne provides clear instructions in this post as well as suggestions on how your students might use the word cloud to help them revise, to find words the may have over used and more!

Google Docs adds add-ons — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Take a close look at the Google Doc or Sheet you likely have open right now and you’ll see something new on a tab about the WYSIWYG tools.

Last week Google launched add-ons–easily accessible tools created by Google’s developer partners that offer on-the-fly features for your documents and spreadsheets."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Google has just launched add-ons, tools that provide more resources for you to use with Google Doc and Sheet. Over fifty are now available (and more are expected to be added). A few are listed below.

* EasyBib Bibliography generator allows you to search EasyBib and generate citations (MLA, APA and Chicago Manual)

* Open Clip Art provides quick access to over 50,000 images you can insert

* Kazena Shortcut allows you to provide audio feedback with Google Doc and Sheet

* LucidChart allows you to insert a mindmap, flow chart or diagram directly into your doc (and LucidDiagram is also available)

* ProWriting Aid - check for plagiarism, grammar and redundant phrases

The Best PowerPoint Alternatives for Creating Great Presentations - The Digital Shift

The Best PowerPoint Alternatives for Creating Great Presentations - The Digital Shift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"We’ve all endured “death by PowerPoint.” It’s a painful experience for the audience and probably not all that fun for the presenter either. To help my students deliver effective presentations—free of those deadly bullet points—I have my go-to applications."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Richard Byrne shares alternatives to PowerPoint with a twist. He includes additional tools that help students outline their stories; find high quality images that are public domain and/or Creative Commons; and a variety of web-based presentation tools as well as Haiku Deck, and app for the iPad.

In total he shares eight resources providing links to all as well as short descriptions.

This isn't directly related to film production. Still, we all are called upon to make presentations. Some great resources here. Perhaps even helpful for producers, directors, DoP's.

Good ideas to help students add interest.

Google Docs Releases New Research Tools - Streamline Search for Info

Google Docs Releases New Research Tools - Streamline Search for Info | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Google is always looking for ways to enhance user experience and they are particularly good at integrating more tools into their existing products. This time they are offering some useful refinements to Google Docs. If you’re a researcher you’re gonna love this.

Now when you are composing in Google Docs you will have access to a research pane which can bring up information relevant to what you are writing about. So if you are writing a paper about George Washington and you forgot to document a fact about his life, all you have to do is go into tools and bring up the research pane."

I have tested this tool and it allows you to quickly find additional information without leaving the document you are working on. For many students this would prove valuable.

Digital Notes: Combine Readability and Google Docs

Digital Notes: Combine Readability and Google Docs | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Readability is one of my favorite tools, a tool that removes 'clutter' from webpages, creating a page that is clean of ads. This post looks at combining Readability with Google Docs, making "an effective and efficient method of taking digital notes." This provides another way that students may choose to take notes.

There is a Google Presentation that provides additional information about how to work with Readability and Google Docs.

I also like to use Readability with Natural Reader, a free program put out by Natural Soft, that will read text to students.
