The Ultimate Directory Of Free Image Sources | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
So, you need an image for your blog? We’ve spent some time categorizing our favorite sources for free images and organizing them in such a way as to help you find what you’re looking for. Here are ...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Finding great images that are free can take time. This post provides an amazing number of resources that will help you with this task. They have also included five pieces of information for each site:

* Subject - does it focus in a particular area or not

* Description

* High resolution - many images available today may be of low resolution

* License - Creative Commons, Public Domain, or specific attributions that may be required

* Safety - is this a site that is appropriate for students or may there be cause for concern

The post then splits the list into a variety of areas:
* Search Engines

* Large Crowdsourced Collections

* U.S. Government Collections

* Unique Collections, including

   -  Getty

   -  Pixabay

   - and approximately 20 more sites

* Specific Subjects

* Clip Art

You will find many great images as you explore these collections.

Copyright Flowchart: Can I Use It? Yes? No? If This... Then... | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
It is the responsibility of all educators to model good digital citizenship for their students. Especially when it comes to copyright, plagiarism and intellectual property. The waters are murky. No...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Teaching teachers and students about copyright and asking them to respect intellectual property is not an easy task, but it is critical that we teach students that plagiarism is not acceptable (and that we follow the same rules). This infographic provides one way for teachers and students to determine what they may do and also provides information on how you may take material you have created and either place it under Creative Commons or choose to copyright the work.

niftyjock's curator insight, June 15, 2014 3:33 AM

less "catch me if you can" and more "I'll be a responsible  digital citizen"

Kimberly House's curator insight, June 15, 2014 1:32 PM

Fantastic! This is so helpful for students and teachers who are always a bit unclear on the grey areas of copyright. No matter which country you live in, these are clear and helpful.

Citing an Image is Not Enough!

Citing an Image is Not Enough! | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
I am thrilled to see so many students creating blog posts and going BEYOND "writing" text made up letters, words, sentences and paragraphs. Being able to "read" and "write" in other media is part o...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Yet there is still the issue that students are citing images without checking to see if they have the correct permissions to do so. Students (and teachers) need to be aware of copyright rules. Using resources like Flickr you will find many pictures but students need to learn how check to see if the image is under Creative Commons and accurately site the source.

Langwitch does an excellent job explaining a situtation that she experienced with her students and provides screenshots to help you understand what to look for. Teaching students how to cite resources is teaching our students media literacy.

Consider having your students create an image that they could put under Create Commons and have attibuted to them of others were to use it.

I don't know that I, myself, am as through as I could be about this. Thanks

Free Technology for Teachers: Every Stock Photo - A Search Engine for Free Images

Free Technology for Teachers: Every Stock Photo - A Search Engine for Free Images | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"The next time that you need to find some high resolution images for a slideshow skip the Google Image search and head over to Every Stock Photo. Every Stock Photo is a search engine for public domain and Creative Commons licensed pictures. When you search on Every Stock Photo it pulls images from dozens of sources across the web."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Check out this site the next time you need to find pictures for multi-media presentations. It only searches for images in the public domain (and that are Creative Common licensed). Please note that the photos at their website are free to use but they also provide access to photos from Fotolia which may require some payment.

Sue Alexander's curator insight, May 25, 2013 10:05 PM

What a wonderful source of images plus built in lesson in digital citizenship. I love having to opportunity to discuss both attribution and resolution during an image search.

Welcome to the School of Open, Class of 2013 - Creative Commons

Welcome to the School of Open, Class of 2013 - Creative Commons | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. Happy Open Education Week! We are happy to announce that the School of Open community has launched its first set of courses...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Are you interested in learning more about US copyright law for educators (and also for those in Australia) or how to find and adapt Creative Common materials for you class? These two classes (and others) are being offered at the School of Open through P2PU. There are also courses that you may take any time. For the courses mentioned above you must register by Sunday, March 17th and they begin next week. The others are available at any time.

Many schools are beginning to look at using open source materials, and if you search this Scoop.it you will find quite a few resources about open source materials, but these are the first classes I have seen that are geared to educators around issues that we should educate ourselves if we are going to be going in the direction of open source. If you have the time consider signing up for one of the classes.

OER university will provide free learning with formal academic credit - Creative Commons

OER university will provide free learning with formal academic credit - Creative Commons | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Creative Commons licenses are enabling an international partnership of accredited universities, colleges and polytechnics to provide free learning opportunities for students worldwide with pathways to formal academic credit. The OER university (OERu) will create a parallel learning universe for learners who cannot afford a tertiary education by offering CC-licensed courses — with the opportunity to acquire formal academic credit at greatly reduced cost when compared to full-tuition studies."

Currently the "anchor partners have shortlisted 8 university and college-level courses...as prototypes for refining the...delivery system." Which Creative Commons License is Right for me? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
The poster explains the rules associated with the various types of Creative Commons license visually and helps you pick the right license for sharing your work.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Teaching students about Creative Common licenses helps them to understand issues of plagiarism. What if we have students create an image, or publish a piece of their writing and also have them pick the correct license. We help students become creators and we teach them a new skill. The poster relies on visuals to help students understand the various types of licenses available. Consider posting a copy of this in your classroom.

A Copyright-Friendly Toolkit

A Copyright-Friendly Toolkit | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
A true digital citizen understands how to ethically use the works of others to build his or her own creative products—music, art, video,...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Today we want our students to create, yet we know they do this by remixing and reusing "intellectual property" from others. Do they understand the need to give credit where credit is due. This toolkit provides a wide range of resources to help them make the correct decision (or to help you teach them how to make that decision). Sections include:

* What is Creative Commons?
* How to find Creative Commons content? Remember, content may include images, audio, video and YouTube (as examples). This section is quite robust in providing access to many resources, including portal for music, images and video as well as favorite sources for images and sounds.

* What do those Creative Commons License icons mean?

* Creative Commons licenses are for you too! What if your students create content and license it under Creative Commons?

* Public Domain resources

* Fair Use

* And more!

This is a great resource that is probably best for older students but the resources will guide you to locations that you may use with younger students also.

Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic is designed as a comic and explains the ins and outs of using Creative Common images. You might consider using it with students. Originally designed in German this is an English translation by the designer. The infographic designed in German provides an explanation as to how you might read the infographic as a comic, providing short descriptions for each section. You may access the German version at this link: http://www.bildersuche.org/creative-commons-infografik.php and if you use Google translator it will translate the text of the article (but not the infographic).

Dean Mantz's curator insight, July 29, 2013 12:37 AM

As a teacher that strongly believes in visual learning, this is a highly recommended visual to aid in the introduction and understanding of what Creative Commons is and how to use it properly.

Digital Literacy: Find Free (and Legal) Images for Your Classroom

Digital Literacy: Find Free (and Legal) Images for Your Classroom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"The Internet has made a myriad of material readily available to a vast audience. Along with these seemingly infinite resources  has come a lot of confusion about how images and other content published online should be legally recognized, protected or used. As educators, we often struggle in navigating that road."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Our students often go to Google or Bing to find images for their work...but they do not always know how to find images that are open source. This post provides many resources that you might use with students, as well as a story about what may happen if a student uses an image that is under copyright.
