Richard Byrne shares two speech to text tools and three text to speech tools that are browser based in this post.

If you are using Chrome and looking for a speech to text app Bryne suggests that you check out the Dictanote Speech Recognizer app, a free app and also Dictation.io. For text to speech he suggests three app. Speak It is for use with Chrome and will read most web pages. Announcify works with Chrome and also comes for the Android. Select and Speak work with Chrome and will read any text on a web page. Bryne explains each of the tools in his post. If you have students whom struggle with reading text to speech tools provide a way for them to work more independently online. For students whom may struggle with the writing process but whom speak cleary a speech to text tool may make an enormous difference in their ability to keep up with work.

Spell Up is a new Chrome experiment, a game designed for Chrome that allows you to use your voice to spell words, letter by letter. But be prepared, as you spell words you build a tower, and the higher the tower the more difficult the word. One mistake and your tower falls. If you have Chrome check out this free game. Here is a new way for students to practice their spelling and have fun. This will also work on your Android and a version is available for the iPad and iPhone but you must type the words. If you are looking for a browser that provides accessible features check out Google Chrome, specifically the "many add-ons available to facilitate access, as well as websites that have been designed to take advantage of features built into Chrome." Once again Paul Hamilton has pulled together a variety of add-ons, both Chrome extensions and apps. All are free from the Chrome Web Store. Some examples of extensions and apps discussed include SpeakIt!, which provides text-to-speech for reading web content; Voice Search, which allows you to speak your search terms (and works with multiple search engines); and Chrome Vis, which allows you do magnify and change the color of text as well as view the text selected inside a separate lens. An additional five add-ons are listed with links to the add-ons and in some cases additional information. Please note "You need a Google (GMail) acccount to install an app."

There are so many apps available for Chrome it may be difficult to choose which have value. For some of the top web apps for students we may look to this list selected by Rahul Roy-Chowdhury who is considered a "Google's Chrome Web App Guru. Suggestions include StayFocusd (a productivity extension); Todo.ly (a to-do list and task manager); Read Later Faster (save pages to read later - online or offline); and StudyStack (helps with memorization).
