Research: Video Production and Engagement: Guidelines for the Talking Heads

Recently Juho Kim, a Ph.D. student at MIT, Rob Rubin, the VP of Engineering at edX, and Philip J. Guo from the University of Rochester  How Video Production Affects Student Engagement: An Empirical Study of MOOC Videos at the ACM Conference on Learning at Scale (L@S).

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, September 10, 2016 6:47 PM

Abstract:

Online courses are gradually becoming a central aspect of education, from high schools to major university doctoral programs. As online courses are embraced to serve curriculum that focuses on spirituality and wisdom traditions, questions arise as to how the teacher can encourage contemplative online learning environments. This paper is an effort to outline ways in which the body, social isolation, identity and aesthetics in online education can be approached mindfully.

Addressing gaps in MOOC research | Academica Group - Research and Consulting for Higher Education

The vast majority of existing empirical research on MOOCs has been performed in North America, write George Veletsianos of Royal Roads University and Peter Shepherdson of the University of Zurich, and this research often provides little insight into how MOOCs might operate in different contexts.

Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:

Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.
Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.
Rosemary Tyrrell, Ed.D.'s curator insight, September 4, 2014 4:23 PM

An interesting study from the EdX people on using videos in an online course.

Invasion of the MOOCs: The Promises and Perils of Massive Open Online Courses | Parlor Press

Invasion of the MOOCs: The Promises and Perils of Massive Open Online Courses | Parlor Press | e-learning-ukr | Scoop.it

Invasion of the MOOCs: The Promise and Perils of Massive Open Online Courses is one of the first collections of essays about the phenomenon of “Massive Online Open Courses.” Unlike accounts in the mainstream media and educational press, Invasion of the MOOCs is not written from the perspective of removed administrators, would-be education entrepreneurs/venture capitalists, or political pundits. Rather, this collection of essays comes from faculty who developed and taught MOOCs in 2012 and 2013, students who participated in those MOOCs, and academics and observers who have first hand experience with MOOCs and higher education. These twenty-one essays reflect the complexity of the very definition of what is (and what might in the near future be) a “MOOC,” along with perspectives and opinions that move far beyond the polarizing debate about MOOCs that has occupied the media in previous accounts. Toward that end, Invasion of the MOOCs reflects a wide variety of impressions about MOOCs from the most recent past and projects possibilities about MOOCs for the not so distant future.
