Doing Good Work Even When No One is Looking: A Vision for Schools

Yet, note that I don’t write articles to get the approval of a teacher or another person. I write and share because I am compelled to do so. I consider it a personal calling to stretch myself and others to consider the challenges and opportunities of life and learning in a connected and digital age. I write the article whether ten people read it or ten thousand people read it. As I often draw from the wisdom of Isaac Asimov to point out, Writing is just thinking with my fingers.” I write to think and to share those thoughts with others.

I believe that ideas matter and that, too often today, we turn our ideas into propaganda by only making them visible in their finished and polished formats. I want people to see my ideas in their naked or raw format as well. They are ideas without the lipstick, without being dressed to impress.

The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing

The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

These teachers see the internet and digital technologies such as social networking sites, cell phones and texting, generally facilitating teens’ personal expression and creativity, broadening the audience for their written material, and encouraging teens to write more often in more formats than may have been the case in prior generations.  At the same time, they describe the unique challenges of teaching writing in the digital age, including the “creep” of informal style into formal writing assignments and the need to better educate students about issues such as plagiarism and fair use.

Hackers turn 162,000 WordPress sites into DDoS attack tools

Hackers turn 162,000 WordPress sites into DDoS attack tools | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
Legitimate sites forced to aid criminals' illicit botnet operations

Hackers have hijacked more than 162,000 legitimate WordPress sites, connecting them to a criminal botnet and forcing them to mount distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, according to security firm Sucuri.

Sucuri CTO Daniel Cid said the company uncovered the botnet when analysing an attack targeting one of its customers. Cid said Sucuri managed to trace the source of the attack to legitimate WordPress sites.

"The most interesting part is that all the requests were coming from valid and legitimate WordPress sites. Yes, other WordPress sites were sending random requests at a very large scale and bringing the site down," read the blog.

Blogging in the classroom: why your students should write online

Blogging in the classroom: why your students should write online | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
For the past few months Michael Drennan's GCSE and A level students have been doing all their writing via student blogs.

Students realise how high the bar of public domain writing is. This can be initially intimidating, but that removes all apathy or sense of the humdrum. Asking all students to write blogs as learning unfolds and interlinks empowers the teacher to be more supportive because they're less tied to the bureaucracy; it raises challenge levels; it enables IT-skilling; it lets students see their own progress and differentiates well; it means more productive and accelerating learning-talk over rote-writing.
