A PLN is not necessarily a group of like-minded individuals. If that were the case, you wouldn’t be seeking out other opinions in the first place because it’s likely you already have a group of people in your life who feel and think exactly the same way as you.

PLNs provide you with people who have different viewpoints on hot topic issues and, if they’ve been vetted beforehand, have a wealth of knowledge, credentials, and research to back up their arguments.

As educators, sometimes we haven’t fixed the problem because we keep using the same method to solve it. A student is struggling with math and we send them to the same tutor, or explain it the same way, or use the same software. Sometimes we need someone to come in and point us in the opposite direction before a solution is found.

This is an interesting site, because in the last fifteen years many people talk about "learning to learn", but few know and orientate students to get it. Here we have an indication.

Thanks.

Create a Personal Learning Network in 2015 | PLN | PKM | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
What is a Personal Learning Network (PLN)?  A Personal Learning Network (PLN) is an informal learning network of professionals, industry thought-leaders or organizations. Building a PLN allows one to connect with others who create, curate and/or share valuable information with the intent to educate others in their community. PLNs allow two or more people, who might not know one another personally, to come together to exchange information.

Connect, Share, Communicate this is how "Personal Learning Network" is defined. But if the point is to be in touch with people, is it accurate to use the word "Personal" ?

Being an introvert, this has always nagged subconsciously. Shouldn't we learn to manage our own knowledge before we learn to share it?

Relationships: Who needs them?

Relationships: Who needs them? | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

I have been thinking lately about professional relationships and what role they play in how we learn as professionals, and as people. It would be difficult to learn much in total isolation.

.

The big picture of this can be overwhelming to a novice. It is a mindset change that requires understanding the culture of connectedness before a real immersion can take place. Educators need a basic knowledge of digital literacy to get started. This will quickly, and very painlessly grow with continued connectedness. There are several connected communities to help educators get started.

.

The Educator’s PLN is a start. www.edupln.com.

.

Twitter is probably the best way to experience the need and benefit to connectedness in developing both professional and personal relationships with other educators. Remember that in a group of like-minded people, as smart as any individual is, the group is always smarter. Of course, if you are reading this online, you are probably already connected and all of this makes sense, since you have already drunk the Kool-aid. Please print it out and share with an unconnected colleague.

.

===> To better educate our kids we need to better educate their educators. <===

Why You Need a PLN, and How to Build One

These slides were used during my session "Why You Need a PLN, and How to Build One" conducted at the 2014 ASTD Techknowledge Conference

Via Gust MEES
Tonya Ward Singer's curator insight, January 24, 2014 11:41 AM

What is important to you in a PLN?   I like to network broadly to continuously challenge and stretch the contexts of my thinking, AND connect specifically with others in K-12 ELL, literacy and professional learning to collaborate in addressing shared challenges.

Thanks for being part of my network!

A beginners guide to Personal Learning Networks (PLN).

Eileen Forsyth's curator insight, January 25, 2014 9:05 AM

I can probably find a better source, but this slideshow is a reminder that students who are self-aware of the PLN they are using are more likely to make strategic choices and learn more of what they are interested in. Creating a PLN based on a specific interest or goal would make an excellent independent study.
