I didn’t plan to write a blog about why Twitter for business is so important because as a social media professional, its pretty obvious.
But as I was gathering research for another Twitter marketing subject to write about, I was blown away at how many brands are either stepping back from executing a consistent Twitter strategy or aren’t participating at all.
The media may rant and rave about how Twitter is fading because it doesn’t have a CEO or because it’s not making money, but none of those things make it any less of a social network. Its still at the top, and I predict it will only continue to grow....

Thanks to Twitter, businesses are closer to consumers than ever before. Tweets haven't replaced phone calls and handwritten letters, but they've become a popular way for consumers to vocalize their questions, praise, or complaints -- all in plain view of anyone who can find the conversation online.
But customers don't just expect you to read their tweets about you -- they also expect you to reply. According to charts published on Search Engine Watch, 70% of surveyed Twitter users expect a response from brands they reach out to on Twitter. Of those users, 53% want that response in under an hour.
It's important to have a solid strategy for responding to tweets so you can keep your customers happy and drive engagement on Twitter. Should you include a link in your response? How much punctuation (?, !) should you use? Are emoticons off the table?
To help inform your Twitter response strategy, LeadSift gathered data on answers to these questions and more, and culminated them into the visual below. Consider this data in the context of your own brand voice and what you know about your buyers' behavior to develop an action plan when responses come rolling in. And hurry -- your customers are waiting.

Twitter is easily in my top three favorite social networks because it doesn’t restrict who you can and can’t connect with (unless they have a private profile) and you get rewarded for your hard work. Unlike Facebook, organic reach is very much alive on Twitter and I gain over 100 new followers a day without spending a single dollar.
Here’s the thing…it’s not all about followers, it’s about targeted followers. Are you attracting the right people or just random strangers that will never help further your business?
There are a few ways you can check your follower base to see if you’re on the right track using FollowerWonk. Some of these features will require a premium account depending on how many followers you have.
Whether or not you decide to pay for the full version, I think the free trial version is worth trying out at least once to gain some valuable insights that no other tool currently offers....

Your Twitter profile is important. It’s generally the first thing people look at when they find you on Twitter. Your profile most likely determines whether or not someone will follow you, so why wouldn’t you optimize your Twitter profile?

On October 15th, Twitter released a new feature that gives users the option of receiving direct messages (DMs) from any follower. This means that I could send a direct message to anyone that I follow who doesn’t necessarily follow me back.
I decided to test this feature out of curiosity as an active Tweeter (seeing if any of my followers who I don’t follow back would actually DM me) and from a consumer’s standpoint (would businesses send me direct messaging of their services?).It’s been two weeks since the initial release and from what I have experienced so far with this feature, I’ve made a quick guide of how you should go about using the new DM format, AKA the Do’s and Don’ts....

Before I joined Buffer, I barely had a Twitter account.
It existed by its lonesome for a few years as a placeholder for the day when my work allowed me to tweet freely. That day came when I had the privilege to join up with the Buffer team, and I dove right in, applying all the Twitter knowledge I had stowed away. And still, even with a running start, I had so much to learn.
Knowledge seldom takes the place of experience. So while I muddled through my first few weeks on Twitter—experimenting and fiddling—I noticed the many things I could have only learned by doing. Here are the big ones. Call them Twitter tips for beginners.

Periscope is a platform that allows content creators to gain instant feedback from their audience. You won’t get that on YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook. You are able to interact with your audience and answer their questions during the broadcast. As you begin to gain a following you’ll start seeing familiar faces and they kind of become like friends.
I am a big fan of this new app and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for Periscope. Will it change the journalism industry? Who knows. What I do know is that every content creator, salesman, inventor, techie, artist, musician, and business person should be on this app....

...At the moment, the updated search bar is pretty basic. Twitter plan to continue upgrading as time goes on, and more and more advanced features will become available over time. Still, you're able to set a few parameters, such as the dates you search between and whose posts you're combing through. In other words, you can choose to search a certain person’s tweets between December and January of last year, and you can choose to only search for tweets which contain the hashtag #christmas.
This allows you to track people's changing opinions over time. For those who understand coding and binary and scary words, Twitter have explained their new search bar in impossible amounts of detail over at their official blog post. If you speak fluent binary, check it out. If you don't, all you need to take away from this article is that Twitter is now even more powerful than it was before.

Identifying your strengths and timing your tweets properly will get you started, but there's much more to the equation.
...We love Twitter for rapid interaction, ease of use and because it’s an online gateway to hordes of potential followers (and website visitors). Followers mean popularity, which in turn means trust, which then in turn could lead to customers and brand recognition. There are numerous ways to tap into this glowing hub of activity, watch Eric Kuhn's video for some insider tips.
As Twitter is such a fast flowing social network, doing simple things can often bring you great results very quickly. For example, running a competition is going to get you noticed faster than following someone in the hope they will follow you back because a competition gives Twitter users something that they want. Twitter may be fast and furious but by investing a little effort, it will reward you, eventually. This article will explain some of the ways you can quickly gain those much sought after Twitter followers....

Few tweets we've sent out from @NiemanLab have gotten as much attention in the media world as this one: Want to understand the future of news?
The it in question is a Twitter Card, which is the same tool you use to make your article pages look nice in expanded view on Twitter, with a nice headline, image, and description. But in this case, you want to use the Lead Generation Card, which allows you to connect your Twitter account to whatever service you use for your email newsletter. (We are happy Mailchimp customers; instructions for Mailchimp are here.)
One reason publishers aren’t using Lead Generation Cards as much as they might is that it’s a little confusing. You need to have a Twitter Ads account to build a Lead Generation Card — but you don’t need to actually buy an ad....

I remember when I joined in 2008, that the rules of engagement were just about fun and frivolity. It was a playground for social media enthusiasts that were exploring and pushing the boundaries. It was about having conversations with people all over the world. That still happens.
There were only 4 million people on the platform when I began and using it for marketing was not considered. We were all just playing. Today with mass media embracing it for TV, real time breaking news, distributing content and viral marketing the bird has muscled up.
With its increased maturity the rules have become clearer and its marketing power obvious. Here are some essential rules for Powerful twitter marketing to increase brand awareness, leads and sales....

Since social media is changing so often, it can be hard to keep up with stats and trends that affect how you use it. (From the article): Drive trafficAnother major reason for investing in Twitter is that is can drive MAJOR traffic to your website.Twitter is typically the #1 social traffic source for our clients, and it doesn’t take an enormous amount of effort.Yes, you must consistently create new native content to share on Twitter, and yes, you must be sure to promote yourself clearly, but Twitter will streamline that traffic without issue. Its not like Facebook who continues to become more and more possessive about keeping its users ON Facebook. Twitter isn’t jealous and doesn’t overwhelm us with ads – it allows businesses to easily push followers through to a website. And with its recent 2015 updates of video and photos, its even easier to drive traffic wherever you want it to go.
