It’s no surprise that the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words,” was coined by one of the leading editors of the 20th century. Here in the 21st century, there is a battle for customer attention and the pressure to deliver meaning and business impact quickly is compounded by our always-on digital, social, and mobile world. In my estimation, the reason why more experienced social media marketers gravitate toward Slideshare is that they eventually recognize that social media is about actions, not eyeballs. The “reach” offered by the larger consumer-oriented platforms is seductive, but if only a tiny percentage of your fans are seeing your posts in those venues, is the reach really reliable?
Slideshare’s audience is bigger than you might think, is terrific for lead generation, and is populated by people actively seeking information and resources (not dissimilar from a search engine, in that regard).
And that audience is hungry for information. It’s not uncommon to generate significant views and downloads for Slideshare presentations, including 24,000+ and counting for my presentation on reliable reach....
if your target is B2B or professionals, don't miss the opportunity to use slide share for impact and ROI.

Creating your own images is also an excellent tactic for re-purposing text-only content into enticing images. Here are some examples: Turn quotes into an interesting slideshow, post an event announcement on a pretty picture, place stats onto eye-catching graphs, give a blog post title some pizzaz, create an infographic about the history of your biz, create a catchy, custom featured image for a video, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Why do so many videos made by companies fall flat? In many cases, it's because they lack the essential component of storytelling - conflict.
Always remember the storytelling elements, no matter who you are working with.
This article made so much sense to me that I had to sit down and listen to the podcast right away. Here's some comments that stood out for me:
Brands are struggling. What's missing is conflict.
Need to inject conflict without damaging the brand.
Too many provide a false picture – everything is wonderful.
Have to (provide and) overcome the conflict or the listener won’t like it.
Conflict – get as close as possible to death.
Conflict – best kind of universal truth.
How to find your org/brands conflict? Need to take a softer look at the notion of conflict (the term conflict brings up certain imagery, feelings). Conflict is simply something to overcome. Ask yourself - do we want to be a company who wants to overcome things?
There's also a great made-up example (Donut Corp) provided of how an organization could find it's conflict.

Here's a fascinating article about the problems with virtual reality storytelling and empathy.
Virtual Reality (VR) is all the rage and very popular at SXSW. We know storytelling is a powerhouse for building our empathy muscles. But what is the impact of VR on empathy?
Turns out, it's not what you think.
The aim of VR is to encourage a human connection and understanding between those wearing a headset and the characters in the story.
Problems around empathy rise when certain stories simply generate a feeling of helplessness in the participant that leads to greater detachment -- not greater human connection.
I love what one of those interviewed for the article says near the end: "But the empathy idea presents another problem for me – the notion that the world's problems arise from a scarcity of feeling rather than from issues of power, inequality and exploitation of people and planetary resources." Hear hear.
There are more details and insights to read in this long-very-long post, and it will make you go, "huh".
What do you think about VR, empathy, and this storytelling trend?
