PRINCE2 Project Management for Managing Scrum Teams

PRINCE2 Project Management for Managing Scrum Teams | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
By Peter Krischel. PRINCE2® is the best project management platform to use when you are dealing with managing multiple Scrum teams.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

"PRINCE2 and PMP® are fundamentally different, although both are called a project management method. PMP is about creating products in a project environment. PRINCE2 is about creating a controlled environment where we do not get surprised all the time. PRINCE2 is not focused on a specific way to create deliverables, or specialist products. PRINCE2 is generic and Team Managers can use any kind of methodology or framework, including Scrum, to create the products. In short, PRINCE2 is focused on the management products, whereas Scrum is focused on the specialist products."

Myth: You Can't Do Projects With Scrum

Myth: You Can't Do Projects With Scrum | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Scrum is intended as a simple, yet sufficient framework for complex product delivery.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Tips for making projects work with Scrum

So suppose you find yourself in an organization that works with projects. One strategy is to go on a crusade to banish projects from the lexicon. A much more productive one is to start with what you’ve got and make it work in a way that supports empiricism. Here’s what we like to do:

  • Make the scope of the project transparent on the Product Backlog and change it as new insights emerge;
  • Consider what would be necessary to guarantee a valuable and high-quality outcome of the project, and embed this in your Definition of Done;
  • The budget of the project is what determines how much work from the Product Backlog can be completed. When it runs out, and when there is value in implementing more, it can be extended as necessary;
  • Every Sprint results in a Done increment that is delivered to stakeholders as a milestone and achieves an important business objective. Feedback is used to adapt the Product Backlog as needed;
  • There is a Product Owner, a Scrum Master, and a Development Team. And they have a full mandate over all decisions concerning the project (or the part of the project) they’re working on;
  • Create a roadmap for your project by putting the Product Backlog on its side. This tells you in what order things will happen;
  • If there is a Project Management Office or Steering Committee, work with them to make the above possible. As results start flowing, the need for extensive planning will decrease;
  • Project managers can be a great asset as part of Scrum Teams. Provided they respect the Product Owner and the Scrum Master in their roles, they can help coordinate with stakeholders, deal with organizational politics and remove impediments;
“Project managers can be a great asset as part of Scrum Teams.”

The conversations that you have while doing the above will be far more productive than fighting against the use of the word “project”. Or by claiming that everyone “needs to adopt a product mindset instead of a project mindset” (whatever that really means). You’ll notice that if you start with what you’ve got, and you work empiricism in, all those things will start to change.

“Becoming ‘word police‘ is rarely a good way to engage people in changing their behavior and understanding of how things work.”

PRINCE2, Agile ou les deux ? par Jeff Ball –

PRINCE2, Agile ou les deux ? par Jeff Ball – | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

Laquelle choisir ?

  • Basés sur les spécifications signifie que vous commencez avec un document écrit (et probablement avec un contrat) ;
  • Les projets de découverte eux ont seulement besoin des éléments essentiels pour démarrer ;

With PRINCE2 Agile, the victim is Agile – Part 2

With PRINCE2 Agile, the victim is Agile – Part 2 | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Part 1 outlined my experiences with Scrum in a PRINCE2 environment and outlined a number of conflicts betweenPRINCE2 Agile and Scrum as well as Agile principles
Mickael Ruau's insight:

A ScrumMaster would remove the core PRINCE2 management roles

I still have Ken Schwaber’s original Certified ScrumMaster slide deck authored in 2004. His slide introducing the ScrumMaster role starts…

“As a ScrumMaster, you are responsible for:

Removing the barriers between development and the customer so the customer directly drives development;”

Are there barriers between development and the customer defined in PRINCE2 Agile? Yes. The Project Manager is not the customer, nor is the Team Manager. Are they intermediaries between the person paying for the development and the responders doing the development? Yes.

PRINCE2 and Scrum - Creating the perfect hybrid project

PRINCE2 and Scrum - Creating the perfect hybrid project | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
PRINCE2 and Scrum combined can give you a recognised project management methodology with an effective, agile product delivery. Find out how.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

En résumé, Pince2 pense que Scrum est parfait pour réaliser des mini projets en cascade, sous forme de sprint...

"

Tactic 2 – PRINCE2 as a coach

Another method is to restrict Scrum to Work Packages. Here, you run a PRINCE2 project. The only difference is that the Work Package execution and delivery are done in Scrum. Here, PRINCE2 does everything except for the on-the-ground project work. This works well because Scrum is about project delivery and PRINCE2 doesn’t specify the technical ‘how to’. This is ideal for more PRINCE2-focused environments.

The reason you’d treat a Work Package like a sprint is to make the development process agile. This lets PRINCE2 project managers leverage one of agile’s best advantages: swift delivery. At the same time, you retain the Business Case, defined responsibilities and other advantages of a PRINCE2 project."

With PRINCE2 Agile, the victim is Agile - Part 1

With PRINCE2 Agile, the victim is Agile - Part 1 | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
In this blog post, we explore some of the apparent conflicts in PRINCE2 Agile and pose some key questions for leaders that these issues present.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

To be clear, PRINCE2 is perfectly good for what it is designed to do for the organisational context and project control characteristics that it is designed to achieve. From an organisational culture perspective, it is wonderfully aligned with a Hierachy/Control culture.

In Cynefin terms, its predictive and centralised control approach is likely a good tool for project-based initiatives that are limited to the Complicated space but not where there is substantial exposure to Complex space. Purporting to be appropriate for being Agile raises the question: how does PRINCE2 Agile look from an Agile perspective?

It is insightful to critique PRINCE2 Agile from an Agile and Scrum perspective as it illustrates the many ways in which Agile and Scrum are misinterpreted from a traditional project management or Tayloristic mindset and provides specific examples of what Scrum is not. I did a similar thing in 2016 when I did a presentation called Illuminating the potential of Scrum by comparing LeSS with SAFe.

In Part 1 of this series I share a little of my background in relation to combining PRINCE2 with Agile/Scrum and we discuss apparent conflicts in the contrasting control approaches of PRINCE2 and Scrum.

PRINCE2 et Scrum… compatibles ? – | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
