This eMag on Data-Driven Decision Making provides an overview of how the three main activities in software delivery can be supported by data-driven decision making to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and service reliability of a software delivery organization.

The articles in this eMag come from the InfoQ series on Data-Driven Decision Making where Vladyslav Ukis shared his experiences from Siemens Healthineers; a large-scale distributed software delivery organization consisting of 16 software delivery teams located in three countries.

Each of the articles highlights an area where data-driven decision making can be applied:

  • In Product Management, Hypotheses can be used to steer the effectiveness of product decisions.
  • In Development, Continuous Delivery Indicators can be used to steer the efficiency of the development process.
  • In Operations, SRE’s SLIs and SLOs can be used to steer the reliability of services in production.

Properties of good SLI metrics In this section, we will talk about how to choose good metrics(SLI). First of all, let’s think about our target. We need to make our users are happy. Good SLI should have some characteristics:
predictable relationship with user happiness shows service is working as users expect to expressed as: good events / valid events aggregated over a long time horizon How do you think why the upper metric is bad?

An Engineer’s Guide To SLA, SLO, and SLI.

An Engineer’s Guide To SLA, SLO, and SLI. | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Engineers want software systems to be massive, yet be agile, to perform at the highest class, and to not compromise on security. They want software with the ability to scale, be simple in design…
Mickael Ruau's insight:

In summary,
1. SLIs are ways for engineers to communicate quantitative data about systems.
2. SLOs are designed to provide a certain level of service, defined using SLIs.
3. SLAs are exchanged on the basis of understanding the SLOs which teams adopt.
4. If user behaviour is not included in these definitions, they remain deficient.
