When Google Reader made its recent changes, the first thought many people had was what RSS reading options were there? I think many of those people complained about the lack of the old sharing and the loss of RSS feeds for peoples shares.

How Hashtagging the Web provides data for research purposes | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it
While Twitter generates mass interest and curates collective thought, its trends cannot represent the true pulse of world conversation. That needs to change.

However,  the Library of Congress was more forward thinking in archiving Twitter since 2010. Twitter data, presumed to represent the pulse — and sometimes the future — of popular consciousness, now commands big bucks from hedge funds that in turn use Twitter data to make investment predictions. Even scientists are tapping into Twitter data for research purposes.

3 Commandments for the Next Online Content Leaders: Authority, Curation, Context | Mashable | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

The electronic and egalitarian publishing era ushered in by the blogosphere has created a unique set of problems. Digital publishing volume continues to expand, and in its growing wake, users are left in a constant state of uncertainty.

In an age when anyone with an iPhone or a Twitter account has essentially become a broadcaster, users must navigate the clutter of digital content to arrive at trusted sources.

Build your brand's content future around the three pillars of Authority, Curation and Context.

No brand is exempt from these rules. If you think you have time to coast, even just a little, you’ll soon find yourself and your brand out of vogue.

Taking an internal audit and implementing change is not easy, nor is it cheap. But in the end, the payoff will be felt all around.

Content Curation for Twitter: How To Be a "Thought Leader DJ" | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

1. First, realize that you ARE a subject matter expert. Narrow your topic or topics to what you know well. What do you want to focus on and share? What do you already have opinions about in your industry? Whom do you know? Be specific. What should be in your Twitter "mix"? Think 70-20-10.

Forecast 2020: Web 3.0+ and Collective Intelligence

Forecast 2020: Web 3.0+ and Collective Intelligence | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Brief but thought provoking article, including ideas about 'future universities'... "Let's focus on the resulting element - the "collective intelligence". Think about it as billions of human brains working using future super computers as a platform. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Srini Devadas described "collective intelligence" as consisting of two pillars: cloud computing and crowd computing. Cloud computing is using the Internet as a platform and making access to information available to everyone. Crowd computing, according to him, involves the analysis of information into "collective intelligence"; far beyond what we have today."

Curated Search Gets Closer: Bing Introduces Editors' Picks - A Human-Curated Guide To the Best Sites

Curated Search Gets Closer: Bing Introduces Editors' Picks - A Human-Curated Guide To the Best Sites | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Bingo for Bing!

Bing, the search engine, has just introduced Editor's Picks, curated selection of web sites to complement organic search results.

This is the direction of the future.

From the official Bing site: "Editors’ Picks were designed to enhance Bing results by bringing editorially selected sites to your search experience.

Our goal, whether delivered by algorithm or by editors, is to help you find what you’re looking for faster and to get stuff done.

Editors’ Picks are small collections of relevant sites that our online editorial experts think will be useful to you, but may not always make it to the top of the search results page."

As long as the "editorial experts" will start to move out of Bing and in from their true audience, while showing maximum transparency for their credentials and selection criteria and the more we move closer to the "curated search engine" experience which may become the key innovation for major search engines in 2012.

Let's see...

How To Video Curation: YouTube Playlists

How To Video Curation: YouTube Playlists | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

From the article:

"...I really don't like playing a guessing game and taking a stab at random videos.

...Playlists translate those single minutes into double-digit minutes or an hour if you've constructed a compelling string of content.

I know whenever I first find a video and get interested in the creator's channel, I like to find the most-viewed videos first and work my way through their greatest hits.

If those creators construct a playlist of those particular videos, it makes it easier to navigate.

...most channels are not going to be that consistent. It's good to have a "portfolio" of what represents the best work, or keeps a specific audience tuned in with a particularly compelling theme.

Much like annotations and other links, playlists can also be used to tent-pole new videos by providing a playlist full of great content that ultimately leads to the newest video.

...playlists can help improve your standing in the mystical YouTube algorithm."

Content Curation: Why Detecting Emerging Patterns Is Crucial?

Content Curation: Why Detecting Emerging Patterns Is Crucial? | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

The identification of emerging patterns is essential to content curation. This is an activity  that information professionals should be proficient at - adapted to social media environments.

Excerpt from article:

Content curation is a response to the desire to become an expert on a specific topic of interest. Content curation can aid individuals and institutions who seek to gain awareness on developments in an area or seek to become recognized knowledge experts for a specific topic....

It is critical to detect emerging patterns in information early to be an effective content curator. Pattern detection is important for a few reasons:

1. If there is an emerging pattern, there’s something going on - An emerging pattern is the starting point that signals that an important event is on the cusp of taking place...

2. Patterns provide insights on the significance of an event - Patterns provide valuable information on the magnitude and importance of an event....

3. Patterns demonstrate how events evolve - Relevance is increasingly time sensitive. The availability of real-time information requires successful content curators to get their hands on fresh information.

4. Patterns link together pieces of the information puzzle - A good content curator needs to understand emerging events in their totality...

5. Understanding patterns helps to identify experts - The most authoritative people on a topic are usually those that are able to report first on a matter, and generate buzz around new developments.

Best curators are those that see patterns that nobody else sees....

New Project WikiSweeper aggregates multimedia streams into real-time curation interface | ReadWriteWeb | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Wikipedia pages about big news events are edited so fast and furious it's hard to keep track of why decisions were made, to make sure the editing is really optimized and to ensure that the most trustworthy sources get trusted and cited. A new experiment with crisis mapping organization Ushahidi is looking to change that. Ushahidi announced this morning that it has launched a new project called WikiSweeper, a new version of its open source hybrid of Tweetdeck and Google Reader called Sweeper that's built for Wikipedia editors.

Sweeper aggregates all kinds of multimedia streams into an analytics-rich, real-time curation interface. As Wikipedians use the tool, analytics will be gathered to help Wikipedia study how high-pressure editing is being performed and to help Ushahidi further build out Sweeper.....
