Curating is about finding and selecting information in order to learn about a subject. Youngsters can be encouraged to do this  pre-school.  This motivational 21st century skill can be encouraged at home. with educational games toys and and books which stimulates interest.  For example children can learn about  science by interacting with Chemistry Lab; Horrible Science - explosive experiments; Newton's Cradle and Science Museum.  By the time they get to school they are already full of curiosity and ready to increase their knowledge.  Audrey curating for www.homeschoolsource.co.uk

Here's a short first-hand report highlighting how an 8th grade social studies class teacher (Terri Inloes) has fully leveraged the content curation potential to let her students dive, discover and make sense of topics (in this case social reform movements) that they had not studied before. All by themselves.


Here the steps taken to make this happen:


a) By using the Question Formulation Technique, the teacher prepared pairs of photographs representing each of the reform movements, one picture dating back to the late 19th century, and another representing where that social reform movement stands in today’s society. 


b) After checking out all of the photos, students settled on the pair of pictures that most caught their interest.


c) They brainstormed and refined a set of specific questions, and then shared their thinking with the class. 

d) With the feedback received they selected the topic which they would curate. 

e) At this point students planned their research strategies. By using 5 different graphic organizers from the book Q Tasks, by Carol Koechlin and Sandi Zwaan, students were allowed to choose the one that they thought would help them the most in planning their keyword search strategies. 


f) Students were assigned WordPress blogs and provided basic instructions on how to use them to 

curate and publish their research work.


g) Discovery and real learning kicked in as students proceeded in collaborative groups to research and document their chosen topic.

From the official abstract: "An emerging class of online tools, including Pinterest, Scoop.it, EduClipper, and others, allows users to quickly and easily gather, organize, and share collections of online resources, particularly visual content.

 

These applications make it easy to collect and post disparate bits of content, providing visual groupings at a glance that can reveal important patterns.

One of the important elements of the tripartite model of content curation is sharing. It assumes the value which is determined by the purpose and the objectives set by the topic curator(s). Sharing may, for example, follow a marketing strategy or may be moved by the spontaneity of the curator (or the user/follower). With regard to Personal Knowledge Management (PKM), Harold Jarche highlights a significant aspect to guide sharing: discernment, i.e., when sharing you must be aware of the following aspects: when, with whom and how. Sharing can be done openly, through a blog, or it can be targeted to a particular community or network. Like PKM, when you are curating, a discerning sharing also contributes to build trust. If a curator sets himself as a reliable node for a community or network, his intervention will have a greater value and impact.

I really am drawn by the graphic and the abstraction, discernment, is full of resonants, aftertones, undertones, and tones yet to be heard but imminent. Discernment changes daily. I think this is a reminder that we need to approach curation with a 'prayer' of focus. For example, in curation-ed I need to invoke a hope to find words, minds, and text that will help us all seek/filter/create sense/discern/and share.

To refine a science of how to transmit, explain and illustrate what "needs to be known" or that we empower learners to create their own learning direction, approach, scaffolding and pace, by providing them with the ability to "drive" and "build" their learning value and not by having them become open sponges that memorize and comprehend what we offer them?

 

From the original article by Dominik Lukes: "A self-directed, self-motivated learner, will take any resources (no matter how pedagogically naive or badly instructionally designed – Khan Academy, iTunesU lectures, iPad ebooks, labs, conventional classes or TED videos) and use them to learn.

 

As the learner becomes more aware of their own learning (gaining metacognitive skills), they will look for resources that suit their learning better. And, in many cases, will create such resources.

 

That’s why we need to encourage a culture of the remix. Or in starker terms: Curation and creation over education."

Robin Good: Must-read article on ClutterMuseum.com by Leslie M-B, exploring in depth the opportunity to have students master their selected topics by "curating" them, rather than by reading and memorizing facts about them.

 

"Critical and creative thinking should be prioritized over remembering content"

 

"That students should learn to think for themselves may seem like a no-brainer to many readers, but if you look at the textbook packages put out by publishers, you’ll find that the texts and accompanying materials (for both teachers and students) assume students are expected to read and retain content—and then be tested on it.

 

Instead, between middle school (if not earlier) and college graduation, students should practice—if not master—how to question, critique, research, and construct an argument like an historian."

 

This is indeed the critical point. Moving education from an effort to memorize things on which then to be tested, to a collaborative exercise in creating new knowledge and value by pulling and editing together individual pieces of content, resources and tools that allow the explanation/illustration of a topic from a specific viewpoint/for a specific need.

 

And I can't avoid to rejoice and second her next proposition: "What if we shifted the standards’ primary emphasis from content, and not to just the development of traditional skills—basic knowledge recall, document interpretation, research, and essay-writing—but to the cultivation of skills that challenge students to make unconventional connections, skills that are essential for thriving in the 21st century?"

We often ask our students to create annotated bibliographies, and this focuses on their capacity to evaluate and make decisions about the validity, reliability and relevance of sources they have found. using Scoop.it, we can ask them to do much the same thing, but they will publish their ideas for an audience, and will also be able to provide and use peer feedback to enhance and tighten up their thinking. This is relevant to any curriculum area. Of course it is dependent on schools being able to access any social media, but rather than thinking about what is impossible, perhaps we could start thinking about what is possible and lobbying for change.

Robin Good: Next Tuesday, July 10th I will be running a live online workshop on "content curation for education and learning" as part of the e/merge 2012 web conference.

 

My session (90 mins.) will focus on defining curation within an educational/learning context and analyzing the factors that will rapidly make curation a major new interest area. I will look at the key benefits that content curation may bring, as well as at the types of content curation that are possible and the key tools available to do it.

 

I will finally showcase a few interesting examples of curation at work, before diving into a "live" collaborative session in which I will be joined by participants in the creation of a collection of great examples of curated content for education/learning. 

 

A follow-up Q&A session is sheduled for the following week on Tue 17 at 12:15 GMT+2

EdCanvas is a web service which allows you to search, find, clip and collect any kind of content, from text to video clips and to organize it into visual boards for educational and learning purposes.

 

Differently than Pinterest, EdCanvas is specifically targeted at the education world and at schools and teachers, and it makes possible not just to collect "images" from web pages, but to collect and organize whichever content elements you want, including full web pages.

 

EdCanvas boards also offer the ability to easily reposition each item in the collection according to your preferences and it provides a number of pre-set layout options for displaying content in your boards.

Robin Good: Must-read article on ClutterMuseum.com by Leslie M-B, exploring in depth the opportunity to have students master their selected topics by "curating" them, rather than by reading and memorizing facts about them.

 

"Critical and creative thinking should be prioritized over remembering content"

 

"That students should learn to think for themselves may seem like a no-brainer to many readers, but if you look at the textbook packages put out by publishers, you’ll find that the texts and accompanying materials (for both teachers and students) assume students are expected to read and retain content—and then be tested on it.

 

Instead, between middle school (if not earlier) and college graduation, students should practice—if not master—how to question, critique, research, and construct an argument like an historian."

 

This is indeed the critical point. Moving education from an effort to memorize things on which then to be tested, to a collaborative exercise in creating new knowledge and value by pulling and editing together individual pieces of content, resources and tools that allow the explanation/illustration of a topic from a specific viewpoint/for a specific need.

 

And I can't avoid to rejoice and second her next proposition: "What if we shifted the standards’ primary emphasis from content, and not to just the development of traditional skills—basic knowledge recall, document interpretation, research, and essay-writing—but to the cultivation of skills that challenge students to make unconventional connections, skills that are essential for thriving in the 21st century?"

We often ask our students to create annotated bibliographies, and this focuses on their capacity to evaluate and make decisions about the validity, reliability and relevance of sources they have found. using Scoop.it, we can ask them to do much the same thing, but they will publish their ideas for an audience, and will also be able to provide and use peer feedback to enhance and tighten up their thinking. This is relevant to any curriculum area. Of course it is dependent on schools being able to access any social media, but rather than thinking about what is impossible, perhaps we could start thinking about what is possible and lobbying for change.

Instructors are information curators. At iTteachU (University of Alaska), this is how teachers are using content curation tools in the classroom to:

 

- create group activities;

- organize and disseminate new content as a sort of digital handout to students in online and flipped classrooms;

- collect and share professional reading materials with students;

- foster discussion about current events;

- encourage students to become both content creators and curators;

- connect to experts outside class and to the world knowledge base;

- critique information available on the web. teach students to curate social media;

- help students gain credibility and exposure;

- keep track of online research efforts;

- create reading lists;

- help students gain access to the ‘collective intelligence’ of the Internet;

Robin Good: I believe that content curation will play a very important role in the future of education and learning and this presentation-map focuses on this topic.

I have identified at least ten reasons that are transforming and weakening the education-certification system as it is now, and may rapidly give way to new ways of teaching, learning and getting certified which will likely involve a great deal of curation (both for those who teach/guide and those who want to learn).

 

In this presentation-map I am introducing the concept of curation for education, the key factors that I see are transforming traditional academic institutions and the learning industry in general, and the tools, resources and examples that are relevant to those working in these fields and wanting to find out more.

 

As part of my workshop session during the emerge2012 conference in which I have first presented these ideas, I have also created an "open", collaborative wiki-map where, you are welcome to contribute inspiring curated collections.
