Here's Why Facebook Is Blowing $19 Billion On WhatsApp

Here's Why Facebook Is Blowing $19 Billion On WhatsApp | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Even in this era of multibillion-dollar valuations for tech startups that have barely moved out of the founders’ parents’ basement, the idea ofFacebook paying $19 billion for a mobile messaging service seems simply insane.

But that’s what Facebook likely will be spending toacquire WhatsApp, the latest–well, not even actually the latest–social network and communications service. The company today announced the deal, which includes $12 billion in Facebook stock, $4 billion in cash, and up to $3 billion in restricted Facebook stock units to be granted to WhatsApp founders and employees over a four-year vesting period.

Why so much for a service that a lot of people have never even heard of? Because it’s growing really, really fast–faster, in fact, than just about any similar service to date, including Facebook. More than 450 million people are using the service monthly, and 70% of them are active on any given day, according to Facebook’spress release. More than 1 million more are registering to use it every day.

Most stunning, WhatsApp messaging volume is apparently approaching the entire worldwide SMS messaging volume of mobile carriers. That’s the kind of growth Facebook, whose own messaging service has been growing rapidly but nothing like that, simply can’t ignore.

Just When TVs Were Getting Smart, Chromecast Will Make Them Dumb Again

Just When TVs Were Getting Smart, Chromecast Will Make Them Dumb Again | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

By now, you've no doubt heard and/or read something about Google's clever new Chromecast HDMI device, a $35 media streamer introduced yesterday (Google's intro/demo video embedded below). Chromecast has a lot going for it, and could well become Google's first big hit product in the living room. If it does, there will be at least one significant consequence: instead of TVs continuing to become "Smart TVs," they are going to become dumb yet again. This would be a huge blow to TV manufacturers who have labored to convince consumers to spend extra to derive the benefits a Smart TV offers.

Carriers Prepare for Unicast Pressures

Carriers Prepare for Unicast Pressures | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Unicast traffic might account for a small percentage of current video streams on telecom networks but the volume is set to increase dramatically, affecting IPTV-related network investment decisions during the next five years.

That's the view of two operator executives who addressed industry analysts and the media in London Wednesday morning on the fringes of the TV Connectevent at London's Olympia exhibition halls.

Ibrahim Gedeon, the CTO at Canadian operator Telus Corp., and Lukas Fluri, head of Product IT & Devices at Swisscom AG, agreed that unicast video traffic (driven by the uptake of catch-up TV services) would grow from current low levels to somewhere in the region of about 30 percent of total video traffic within the next five years. And that, of course, puts greater pressure on network capacity, planning and management.

The shift from broadcast to unicast video streams has already forced Swisscom to invest in greater core network capacity alongside ongoing investment in mobile broadband, fiber-to-the-home and DSL vectoring in its wireless and fixed access networks, "all very capex-intensive projects," noted Fluri.
