This article talks about the three pillars of educational technology and one of the key pillars is learning management systems. The other two are social media and personal learning environments. LMS is a huge part of the pillar because in a way it ties the two and seeing as how social media is looking to incorporate LMS also.

This article establishes three pillars for educational technology. First is an effective LMS but the other two surround the use of social media and the development of a personalized learning plan. The connected nature of PLN's allow for current research, expansion of learning, and high quality content creation/sharing. This is a longer read but worth it.
