What the Heck is... Gamification? via @BernardMarr

What the Heck is... Gamification? via @BernardMarr | Must Play | Scoop.it

Marty Note
Great post here by a new to me but smart and gets it marketing author Bernard Marr on Linkedin. I posted a comment at the end sharing a link to one of my most popular Haiku Decks - Gamifying Content Marketing http://shar.es/1ag0sH.

Didn't do that to hone in as much as add in. Bernard's post shares some good examples of different gamification applications. The trend in HR and other internal departments to gamify is proving powerful.

I'm interested in the S/R curve of B2C ecommerce websites and find, especially in a connected mobile time, many places where "play" can create the tribes, support and engagement we lucky few Internet marketers crave and are finding harder and harder to create.

Great post, horrible photo (at least for me), so didn't perpetuate it here. Bernard's post is worth a read if you are new to gamification and he is a solid follow. M

Why CONTESTS Are KING: Crowdsource Content & Build Community & Work Great on Social via @HomesDotCom

Erica Campbell Byrum - Homes.com, Social Fresh EAST 2014
Erica Byrum takes a bit to get rolling, you can begin watching at 1:41, but what she is saying about crowdsourcing content via contests is valuable so hang with it.

The real diamond is how contests unearth your 1% Contributors and 9% supporters. Homes.com was smart enough to immediately give thier 1% a mission and I love and plan to steal the "Blogger Ambassador Program" great name add a Social Media Ambassador and you have two sticks you can rub together to create fire.

Stay with this video to hear about the power of serendipitous content their content unearthed, content Homes.com was smart enough to double down on. The Contest was a flop, they thought until they stumbled over the single piece of content that "continues to give back to us this day fast forwarding 3 years later".

Homes.com doesn't do what I would suggest - create a page with a clear Call To Action (an ask) to join the Blogger Ambassador program. Instead they surface their 1% Contributors via contests:  http://blog.homes.com/category/contests/

I like the dedicated page that explains benefits, shares why you created the program and how your Blogger Ambassadors program. Inside of some things I don't agree with (cash is always a powerful incentive) are great tips I do agree with (surprise works, double down on what works, give 1% Contributors a job, use no more than 2 social nets at once). So more GOOD advice than BAD here.

"Contests create gifts that keep on giving" says Eric Campbell Byrum from Homes.com.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Mobile gaming is fully upon us. I'm designing CrowdFunde, our crowdfunding and content marketing app, now and creating mobile first. Bet video games head in the same direction - create the mobile game first then, if the numbers merit it, move to game consoles, laptops and desktops.

Gotten so I think of all Internet marketing as a game and the smartphone as the game console (lol). This LA Times article about Zynga making FarmVille for Mobile is a SOT (Sign of the Times). M

Video Games May improve Dyslexia & Your Internet Marketing [study]

Video Games May improve Dyslexia & Your Internet Marketing [study] | Must Play | Scoop.it
For people with dyslexia, playing action video games may help them better manage shifting attention between audio and visual cues, new research reveals.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

There are several things I like about this study including how it shifts thinking about games as superfluous and moves them to important and educational - a point Steven Johnson makes in Everything Bad Is Good For You.

As a dyslexic who spent many hours with his hand under his chin spelling words phonetically. The learning about sound was fascinating. Researchers think if they can control sound and visual stimulation, like in a video game, dyslexics may learn better (faster).

This is what I remember about dyslexia - learning was so HARD, so inefficient. The other kids could write and spell. I struggled with those outward manifestations of "learning", yet my mind was capable of grasping complex concepts (for a ten year old).

I could DISCUSS those concepts too, but I couldn't WRITE IT DOWN at least not in a way anyone but me could understand it. There is another lesson in this post - don't limit your thinking about how to solve a problem to a narrow band.

How can you add some "video game dyslexia study" into your marketing. Can you make your marketing a game? If you think about it getting people to know and love you online is a bit like teaching a dyslexic, a dyslexic in a hurry.

GAME ON - Facebook Becomes A Gamer [Is This FB Idea GOOD or BAD? Leave A Comment] | Must Play | Scoop.it
After years of being strictly a platform for gaming companies to distribute and promote their titles, Facebook on Tuesday unveiled its new mobile games publishing initiative, aiming to back a select handful of gaming outfits to ...
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Facebook As Partner
Wow, this move by Facebook in interesting and a balloon filled with interesting ideas and notions. Facebook is setting up to do more than simply host games. Facebook will take a cut of game revenue in order to help facilitate product acceptance in ways only it can (tap that amazing database for "like me" gamers).

There is talk that Facebook's real revenue comes from the information they've managed to gather on a billion people. This move suggests a way for Facebook to make money from its information while helping nascent game companies get a leg up. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Khalid Hart's curator insight, March 6, 2014 12:00 PM

Facebook has really turned its tide as far as usage goes.  I rarely if ever see a status anymore. These days all I see is pictures from some page I liked back in 2010 and then multiple candy crush saga invites.  I used to play Mafia Wars until I realized that it's a never ending game. Someone told me they surpassed rank level 999 and was still ascending.  Simply put Facebook has become its own unofficial console. I say that because there are plenty of games to choose from not to mention you can also tie in your mobile device games to Facebook.

Game Based Learning – It Isn't Just Leaderboards And Points! http://t.co/Kd9ka9sDVA … #GBL #GameBasedLearning #Gamification #Innovation
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The Game Is The Thing
Great insight here matching my friend @RDansky's feedback. I understand the idea - the more complete the ecosystem the better the game, the more engagement.

I think there is a distinct difference between #gamification and game based learning. Gamification rides on the surface more. As marketers we want to create systems that reward behaviors we want.

We are Pavlov and Internet marketing isn't a laboratory (despite it feeling that way often). The irony of sounding like Pavlov is the real operant conditioning is happening TO US.

We become conditioned by the Stimulus - Response dance we play with our customers. I employ game mechanics NOT games in our Internet marketing.

Game mechanics are a sophisticated Google Analytics. Game mechanics create a more rapid-fire feedback loop and so clarify the "fog of war". When engagement goes up 9 times out of 10 do conversions.

London Calling Crowdfunding & Contest Tips From The CLASH - A @Curagami @HaikuDeck | Must Play | Scoop.it

Crowdfunding, Contests and Games
Crowdfunding is a lot like an online contest. There is a deadline and you need an army of supporters to get from here to there. You need an army to help achieve your goal. In crowdfunding and contests there must be some tangible reward.

If people don't feel special and like they are part of your community they don't contribute. Crowdfunders use updates. Contests use feedback loops. The key is to create an event with a defined timeline. We START here and end HERE.

As your timeline progress updates feed momentum. What does music and The Clash have to do with contests, crowdfunding and Internet marketing? As it turns out, quite a bit as we shared in this Haiku Deck:

3 MOST Important Words In Internet Marketing? Games, Gamification and Gamify

3 MOST Important Words In Internet Marketing? Games, Gamification and Gamify | Must Play | Scoop.it

PandoDaily (blog)
Von Ahn told me he and his team had to work hard to gamify Duolingo, because at its core it's not a game.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

3 Most Important Words In Internet Marketing: Games, Gamification, Gamify

Why MUST Internet marketers understand games and gaming? Because the wall between THEM (game developers) and US (Internet marketers) is coming down FAST, very fast. There are three reasons for this soon to be tsunami trend:

* Web 3.0.
* How Online Environments Work.
* Human nature.

Web 3.0
We are creating CureCancerStarter.org right now and there are many new rules about web development that reflect where we are going already such as:
* The site is highly responsive (looks good no matter what kind of devices is looking at it).

* This new site uses a Content Delivery Network and the cloud to cache and shuffle information in so fast old rules about image size and speed (bigger = slow) almost don't apply.
* The site is "appified" or designed in a series of Lego-like modules some canned, some written by us from scratch.

Web development is going someplace very different and where we are going is where many video developers already live with extensive branding algorithms to determine what gest shown in what situations.  Soon your "website" will be a series of rules, text and images capable of being combined on the fly in an almost infinite variety of highly converting webpages.

Online Environments
Online environments are very video game like from the jump. Online starts COLD and HARSH and we web designers and developers PLAN how to warm them up. We create a series of linked "journeys" through our information.

If "a series of linked journeys" sounds like Joseph Campbell and Hero With A Thousand Faces you win a cookie. Ideally our environments are heroic and they transfer elements of courage, joy and love to our visitors. Sounds like video games again.

Human Nature
We like to compete, compare and contrast. We seek affinity groups and develop our sense of self, at least partially; from the feedback loops provided by our "like me" groups.

The social web is a "peer group" compare, compete and contrast engine. The more we compare, contrast and compete the more fun we have. Sounds like video games again.

I'm going to read Adam's book and report back once I am in reading mode again (after launching CureCancerStarter, cowdfunding cancer research, and CureCancerStore.org, shop to cure cancer, next week. Phase II development for both of those very new ideas is games, gamification and to gamify.

9 Tips to Power Up Your Social Media [+1 From Marty] | Must Play | Scoop.it
Social media posts tell a story about you and your brand. Here are cautions to heed, trends to follow, and steps to take as you build your social media brand...
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The Missing Tip
These are great tips I agree with, but they are missing one BIG TIP - Gamify. Social media lends itself to gamification beautifully. When you are playing a game you look forward to notices on progress and new happenings.

When playing a game you watch the leaderboard like a golf pro leading on Sunday. The big missing tips among these excellent tips is to GAMIFY. Gamify doesn't have to be complicated.

LinkedIn gamified when they let us know our profiles are only 90% done. That simple statement made all the Type As on LI want to attain 100% profiles. 100% of WHAT exactly (lol).

See what you can gamify and make it easy to play.
