How compatible are Common Core and technology?

How compatible are Common Core and technology? | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

Technology is in every room at P.S. 101 in Brooklyn — it’s even in the hallways. Scan the QR code with your phone outside of the fourth-grade classroom of co-teachers Vanessa Desiano and Jamie Coccia and a video will pop up of a student giving a history presentation on early explorers. Step inside, and fourth-grade students are working together to discover the themes of chapter 13 in their latest book, The Birchbark House, and typing what they find on iPads.

“People have this fear that if you put technology into a classroom, kids will just be staring at computers,” said Principal Gregg Korrol. “But this class is using technology to engage each other directly in learning.”

When I choose to read complex informational text, I usually turn off the computer and read from a hard copy. If I stay on my computer, multi-tasking takes over and my comprehension falters.

Web literacy: Where the Common Core meets common sense | eSchool News

The second driving force is the Common Core State Standards.

Most states will have to rethink their approach to teaching critical analysis of all kinds of information, as the standards require that students be able to:

  • Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism;
  • Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research; and
  • Interpret mathematical results in the context of a situation and reflect on whether the results make sense, possibly improving the model if it has not served its purpose.

Will Texting Destroy Writing Skills?

Will Texting Destroy Writing Skills? | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

"In general, I’m a fan of anything that gets students writing, and there are real benefits to giving students the gift of textual brevity rather than the stomach-churning fear of a five-paragraph structured essay. I’ve done quite a few articles on the benefits of Twitter’s 140-character approach to writing and my teacher’s gut says the same applies to text messaging. Truth, studies on this topic are inconclusive."
