San Diego had a tornado warning: So what should you do if it happens again? –

San Diego had a tornado warning: So what should you do if it happens again? – | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
It’s a rare occurrence, but here we are still talking about it: a tornado warning in San Diego. The warning, which was issued shortly after 11:30 Tuesday morning after an anomaly on the Doppler radar near Chula Vista, expired 45 minutes later. Out of a cluster of cells on radar one triggered a warning that San Diegans aren’t used to…
Alex Gilman's insight:
Just scary how these tornados are starting to appear more and more often in areas that usually don't tend to have them, Mainly California.
Jonathan Lee's comment, February 12, 8:20 PM
I know right, it's weird how many tornadoes are just popping up. Doesn't matter whether it's in a warm area like California or a usually cold state like Wisconsin.
Rai Young's comment, February 13, 4:35 PM
Before this year, I didn’t know California could even get tornados. When I saw the tornado warning I couldn’t believe it. I feel like we’re much better prepared for earthquakes than we are tornados. That might affect how badly the impact would be if one hits us.

Offshore wind in the US could be critical to addressing climate change

Offshore wind in the US could be critical to addressing climate change | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Finding more sources of renewable energy will be critical to battle climate change. In northern Europe, they’re harnessing the ocean winds offshore. Some in Massachusetts are looking to replicate that with some help from across the Atlantic.

Why California is lagging behind the rest of the country when it comes to offshore wind farms

Why California is lagging behind the rest of the country when it comes to offshore wind farms | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Offshore wind power facilities are becoming more common but a California effort faces hurdles.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
While the points made about engineering challenges of deepwater, anti-wind activists, etc. are true, we are leaving out the massive challenge that is permitting in the waters off California.  Many tidal projects off the California coast have all been killed by permitting.  Hence we have tidal projects going in off of Oregon and Baja California, but not here (even though these are designed in the halls and computers of California firms).

Our soon to be shuttered offshore oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel are one potential source of help in this deepwater environment.  To be sure, these are enough of a platform, but they could be parts/nodes of a wider array of ocean-based energy production.

Blue Is The New Green: How Oceans Could Power The Future | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The global potential of tidal and wave power is tremendous, and major projects are underway worldwide. On the coast of California, two companies vying for a shuttered natural gas plant's transmission lines offer the latest indication of an industry coming of age.

Oregon Close to Approving First West Coast Offshore Wind Farm

Oregon Close to Approving First West Coast Offshore Wind Farm | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Five floating wind turbines will be built if the pilot gets final approval.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

The U.S. West Coast is the closest it has come to getting its first offshore wind farm, a small 30-megawatt pilot project off the coast of Oregon. Seattle-based Principle Power wants to build five floating wind turbines 15 miles off of Oregon's Coos Bay. Six-hundred-foot tall turbines would connect it to shore via electric cables. Principle Power received $4 million from the Department of Energy for the project. An environmental analysis of the lease area still needs to be conducted, after which there will be a public comment period before a final decision is made.

Earth Wind Map

Earth Wind Map | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

A beautiful animated map of global wind conditions.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

Building off of the idea of a wind map of the United States by Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viegas, Cameron Beccario made one for Earth, based on data from the Global Forecast System.

This is a great tool for introducing global near-surface wind (and to a certain extent surface water phenomenon such as waves/wave height).  Beautiful illustration!
