See other data visualization circulating through social media outlets (see the article from City Lab, Atlas Obscura or an urban planning program). New maps use math to define the amorphous term.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
Another example is the long line of defining the new geography.

L.A. seeks to protect 'wildlife corridor' in Santa Monica Mountains

L.A. seeks to protect 'wildlife corridor' in Santa Monica Mountains | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
L.A. lawmakers voted for a ¿wildlife corridor¿ in the Santa Monicas, aiming to ensure that wild animals are not cut off from their habitat by development.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
We created such a policy here in Ventura County about a decade ago and it has worked well.  I hope this moderate proposal for a subsection of the Santa Monica Mountains is successful.  If so, it will help maintain the now-limited connectivity at the edges of one of the most populous cities in North America.

Mountain lions in Santa Monica Mountains need more room, experts say

Mountain lions in Santa Monica Mountains need more room, experts say | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
From an urban puma's perspective, the news of late from greater Los Angeles has been mixed.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

The drumbeat for a crossing over the death trap of an animal killer-the 101 Freeway-is heating up.  This particular crossing at Liberty Canyon is a natural place to put it.  But we really need more than one to stave off the worst effect of habitat fragmentation.

Caltrans says OK to Agoura wildlife bridge

Caltrans says OK to Agoura wildlife bridge | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Liberty Canyon Crossing another step closer to completion.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The California Department of Transportation gave approval Tuesday for a plan to build a $60-million wildlife freeway crossing in Agoura Hills.

The unpaved bridge across the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon will feature a natural landscape design to encourage mountain lions, bobcats and other wildlife to safely cross the highway and expand their habitat from the Simi Hills in the north to the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in the south.

Caltrans expects the design phase to be completed in two years, followed by construction possibly starting in late 2020, depending on funding availability.

Mulholland Bridge reopens over 405! | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The above photo shows some of the first motorists to cross the new bridge atop the Sepulveda Pass this morning. The old bridge was demolished during Carmageddon I & II and the new bridge built ...
PIRatE Lab's insight:

You don't want to know the price or person hours it took to replace this "Carmageddon"-inducing crossing spanning one of California's most heavily travelled coastal highways.  But it is done and (amongst other assets) is now an improved wildlife crossing for animals to traverse this deathrap of a road.  Nothing as grand as what our friends in Canada or Croatia have built, but in urbanizing Los Angeles, we will take whatever we can get!

Scientists fear an L.A. County gated community's environmental impact

Scientists fear an L.A. County gated community's environmental impact | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
A Texas developer and a group of California scientists are feuding over the amount of environmental damage a gated community would bring to one of the last remaining parcels of prime wildlife habitat in the southern Santa Susana Mountains.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

While not all development projects in our coastal foothills are particulalry problematic, this one is horrible.  It is proposed on a landslide area, would bury two blue line streas, actually increase fire risk, need a new nearly mile-long road just to get to the property, and pull development into an important wildlife corridor bringing large vertebrates from our more inland mountain ranges into our coastal moutnains.  The preliminary findings that this development would amount to no significant impact to the area is a joke.
