Who Said Recycling Was Green? It Makes Microplastics By the Ton

Who Said Recycling Was Green? It Makes Microplastics By the Ton | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Research out of Scotland suggests that the chopping, shredding and washing of plastic in recycling facilities may turn as much as six to 13 percent of incoming waste into microplastics—tiny, toxic particles that are an emerging and ubiquitous environmental health concern for the planet and people. A team of four researchers measured and analyzed microplastics […]

Ineffective recycling compounds Indonesia’s marine waste problem

Ineffective recycling compounds Indonesia’s marine waste problem | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Indonesia has been in hot water over its contribution to marine waste since 2015, when a report by researcher Jenna Jambeck ranked Indonesia as the world’s second-worst marine plastic polluter for allowing about 1.29 million tons of plastic waste to enter the ocean in 2010 as a result of improper waste management.

The government has been working to prevent waste from ending up in the ocean, including by building the country’s recycling industry.

But the efforts still have a long way to go. Many say the country’s ineffective waste management practices have held the recycling industry back.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
SACRAMENTO - A California lawmaker is taking flak for a measure that would make it illegal for servers to offer plastic straws with drinks unless they're asked.

Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon introduced a bill last week making unsolicited straw-providing a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. However, Calderon says it will be amended to eliminate the penalties. The measure would apply to sit-down restaurants, not bars or fast-food places.

As expected, critics have heaped scorn, calling it government overkill. One asked whether the measure would also apply to cocktail umbrellas.

But the bill has a serious purpose. Calderon says it's aimed at reducing the environmental damage from tons of plastic that wind up each year in U.S. landfills, waterways and the ocean.

A ban on microbeads has entered into force in the UK, meaning products containing the tiny pieces of plastic can no longer be manufactured in the country. The move follows pressure from environmental groups and scientists highlighting the contribution microbeads make to the wider problem of plastic pollution, particularly in the marine environment.

'Zero plastic' organic foods retailer introduces disposable gloves for customers as Covid-19 prevention measure | News

'Zero plastic' organic foods retailer introduces disposable gloves for customers as Covid-19 prevention measure | News | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
A high-end organic foods retailer promoted as “plastic-free shopping” has mandated disposable plastic gloves for customers in its stores in Singapore as a coronavirus prevention measure.

Before entering its stores, customers of Scoop Wholefoods must register using a QR code and then don a pair of single-use plastic gloves. The Australian chain says the gloves are an additional hygiene measure for customers, which use scoops to take dried food from self-service bins in the store.

Individual countries realize the need to increase environmental health as the economy reopens.  A food retailer is helping on a smaller scale by introducing disposable gloves. These will cause less or no harm to the environment if people decide to throw them in the street as opposed to disposing of them properly.

Supermarkets to face huge rise in recycling charges under £1billion scheme to slash Britain's plastic waste

Supermarkets to face huge rise in recycling charges under £1billion scheme to slash Britain's plastic waste | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

The Government wants supermarkets and other manufacturers and producers to pay more towards the cost of collecting and recycling the estimated 11million tons of package waste produced in the UK. Under a new waste strategy, one option is to increase ‘contributions’ from retailers and producers from £70million a year to between £500million and £1billion. There are also plans to increase the number of companies that contribute from the current 7,000, the Guardian said.

Oxnard wastewater set for $74M in upgrades

Three candidates running for city council spoke out against Measure M during the public comment period on Tuesday.
Lauren Wilson's insight:
I've grown up in Oxnard, and it takes being in a class such as this to stop and look around at the impacts that may otherwise fall outside of my, and more than likely the local population's, radar.

Here we see an important act in local health and safety compromised by timing and political climate. It's interesting to see a motivation for action, exclusively political, versus an understanding of what's best for the community. Very interested to hear further opinions on this!
Greg Vance's comment, October 31, 2016 2:06 PM
This is a tough issue. I can clearly see the importance of having a safe, non-polluting wastewater facility, but no one wants to pay more in taxes or on their monthly bill. If money is not spent to maintain and upgrade the aging facility, there can be a health and safety risk posed for the local community. It will be cheaper now if issues are addressed instead of responding to ones that fail from neglect.
