California has record number of container ships waiting off coast

California has record number of container ships waiting off coast | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
In the first and second quarters of 2021, traffic at the Port of Los Angeles was up almost 60 percent and 55 percent, respectively, according to data from the port.
Charles Seamus O'Connor IV's insight:
The amount of shipping waiting off the coast of California could potentially cause harm to the native species around these areas, along with the possibility of a bilge dump introducing invasive species to the area.
Joong Soo Kim's comment, September 1, 2021 4:38 PM
COVID-19 has changed our lives in many ways. It is shocking because normally there would be 0 to 1 ship waiting at anchor but now 46 ships are sitting in the ocean at the port for the past 30 days. Also, I did not know that these ships might cause new invasive species to get into the ocean. I wrote a research paper on invasive species in other class, and as far as I know it costs a lot of time, effort, and even money to completely eradicate once introudced invasive species. This is an urgent problem that needs to be solved.
Jada Gaines's comment, September 1, 2021 7:34 PM
This is another way that COVID is changing our lives continually. There have been a lot of benefits to the stay at home orders globally, but this is an example of how the slight return to normal life has disrupted the normal flow of how things work. The threat to marine life with these large boats out in the harbor is very concerning and the damage could be widespread if it continues for a long period of time.

The fire that swept the Conception was too intense to save any of the passengers trapped below, crew members said.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Something unusual happened here.  The repeated references to the speed/surprising nature of the discovery of the flames is concerning.  Initially the confused media reports and social media kerfffle pointed to some kind of galley or cooking accident, often referencing propane or some kind of explosion.

As the days have passed, this rapid bursting of the ship on fire seems the more consistent narrative.  Things are pointing more towards a huge fire beginning below decks not in the galley per se.  Again, this is all speculation but something like a LiPO battery fire seems more likely at this point.

The lack of a centralized fire alarm is pretty concerning, however.

Brandy D. Christian serves as the President and CEO of the Port of New Orleans, a public agency that manages more than $60 million in revenues…
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Wow...only $60 million in revenue.  This is paltry compared to most of our major ports around the country.  In addition, it is noteworthy the Port of New Orleans seems to be doing very little to modernize/reduce their environmental impact.  Replace 35 trucks?  Really?
