Can I swim in the ocean with the coronavirus outbreak? | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The virus could be carried to the ocean in runoff and then kicked into the air by the surf, a Scripps scientist says.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
I am posting this article because it is getting such attention, but the "science" behind these claims of the danger of wave action pushing coronavirus into lung-infecting coastal air is dubious at best. To make such strong assertions when we are talking about back of the envelope estimates is unwarranted and likely ill-advised.

California boat fire: Crew said inferno was too intense to save passengers

California boat fire: Crew said inferno was too intense to save passengers | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The fire that swept the Conception was too intense to save any of the passengers trapped below, crew members said.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Something unusual happened here.  The repeated references to the speed/surprising nature of the discovery of the flames is concerning.  Initially the confused media reports and social media kerfffle pointed to some kind of galley or cooking accident, often referencing propane or some kind of explosion.

As the days have passed, this rapid bursting of the ship on fire seems the more consistent narrative.  Things are pointing more towards a huge fire beginning below decks not in the galley per se.  Again, this is all speculation but something like a LiPO battery fire seems more likely at this point.

The lack of a centralized fire alarm is pretty concerning, however.

CDFW Gray Wolf Update

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a native species that was likely extirpated from California in the 1920s. Wolves are now returning to California on their own by dispersal of individuals from source populations in other states. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has not reintroduced gray wolves to the state.

The CDFW is working to monitor this recovering endangered species protected under the California Endangered Species Acts. Wolves pose little human safety risk. The public reporting of potential wolf sightings in California are investigated, and valued as a monitoring tool.

California boat fire: Conception wasn't built to charge so many devices

California boat fire: Conception wasn't built to charge so many devices | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Electronic devices were plugged into a series of outlets in the Conception's galley. Those outlets are a focus of the investigation into the deadly dive boat fire that killed 34.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
LiPOs are clearly involved.  While we don't know if they initiated the fire, these devices residing internal to the vessel clearly were problematic.
