The Great Barrier Reef sounds sick, so baby fishes aren't attracted to it

The Great Barrier Reef sounds sick, so baby fishes aren't attracted to it | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The Great Barrier Reef is in trouble. Not only do sections of it look bad, but they sound bad too. And this, it turns out, may be yet another barrier to reef recovery. In a new study published this week, a team led by Tim Gordon, PhD candidate in a marine biology from the University of Exeter, recorded sounds made by coral reefs before and after they were damaged and tested how the sounds changed the response of fish searching for a reef to settle on.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
We have been experimenting with various such tools (but above water on the beach) to directly measure microscopic things like sand grains and plastic fibers.  But this is awesome!  Taking the whole thing underwater is great!

Good to know that the Australian government is going the route of a full environmental retreat for all ecosystems and not "just" for terrestrial protected areas.  G'Day Climate Change!

My job is to write about the wonders and challenges of our coast and oceans, but I’ll admit: Before this story, I had no idea what an abalone looked like.

Prized sea snail not at risk of extinction, federal officials say

Prized sea snail not at risk of extinction, federal officials say | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The National Marine Fisheries Services has decided not to grant federal protection to the pinto abalone, a prized six-inch sea snail whose population has severely declined in Northern California.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

I have not yet fully read the report yet, but it can be found here:

https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2014/12/29/2014-30345/endangered-and-threatened-wildlife-and-plants-notice-of-12-month-finding-on-petitions-to-list-the

From my general knowledge of abs, I am a bit surprised by this finding.  While never as numerous as greens, reds, blacks, etc., pintos have been comparatively scare for quite sometime.  A cog in the serial depletion wheel that was commercial abalone harvesting on the western coast of North America from the late 1800s to the 1980s, Pintos were hammered into much lower abundances than their pre-disturbance conditions.  As we have seen with many species of broadcast spawners, these downward trajectories in density usually translate into downward spirals in encounter rate.  Not a good thing for critters like these.

SCRFA is an international marine conservation NGO working on marine fish aggregations, providing scientific and management information and participating in international committees, meetings and workshops to promote responsible stewardship of fish aggregations globally.

Why do we work on fish aggregations?
♦ Many fishes form aggregations for reproduction or feeding

♦ For most fishes, spawning aggregations are unique opportunities to reproduce

♦ Unmanaged fishing on aggregations, especially spawning aggregations, can rapidly deplete fish populations, impacting on the ecosystem and the livelihoods of those who depend on the fish

♦ Want to know more about the importance of aggregations - watch this 2.5 min film: Spawning for Survival.
