With California's economy on the rebound, the state's voters are slightly more upbeat than voters nationwide about their potential for a prosperous future, but a sharp divide separates the optimism of upscale coastal regions from the anxiety of financially stressed inland areas, according to a new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll.

Consumers in many countries are adopting eco-friendly behavior, but others aren't ready to be green.

This is a good benchmark. But, lumping all Russians or Americans or Chinese together is perhaps not the best way to go about doing this. There is marked difference in consumption in Moscow vs. Siberia, Los Angeles vs. Alaska, etc. While the country level aggregation is great, it would be nice if we could see the break down (and especially the variance) of attitudes in the larger countries.
This might make a particularly interesting comparison for some things when it comes to next week and our Coastal Opinions polling is done for the year.

The American Community Survey, an ongoing survey that the Census administers to millions per year, provides detailed information about how Americans live now and decades ago. There are tons of data tables on topics such as housing situations, education, and commute. The natural thing to do is to download the data, take it at face value, and carry on with your analysis or visualization.
However, as is usually the case with data, there's more to it than that. Paul Overberg, a database editor at USA Today, explains in a practical guide on how to get the most out of the survey data (which can be generalized to other survey results).
