CDFW Gray Wolf Update

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a native species that was likely extirpated from California in the 1920s. Wolves are now returning to California on their own by dispersal of individuals from source populations in other states. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has not reintroduced gray wolves to the state.

The CDFW is working to monitor this recovering endangered species protected under the California Endangered Species Acts. Wolves pose little human safety risk. The public reporting of potential wolf sightings in California are investigated, and valued as a monitoring tool.

Mountain lion, bobcat in Santa Monica Mountains study die after ingesting rat poison

Mountain lion, bobcat in Santa Monica Mountains study die after ingesting rat poison | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
A young mountain lion and a bobcat that were both part of wildlife studies in the Santa Monica Mountains have died after ingesting rat poison, National Park Service biologists said Thursday.

The death of the female bobcat, known as B-732, is just the second from the effects of anticoagulant rodenticides among the species in the study’s 24-year history, and the first in 23 years, according to an NPS news release.

Her carcass was found on June 20, beneath an oak tree in an Agoura Hills neighborhood. A necropsy found brodifacoum, bromadiolone and diphacinone in the bobcat’s liver; the compounds included first- and second- generation poisons, according to the park service.

Louisiana gator farmers get ornery as California's ban finally goes into effect

Louisiana gator farmers get ornery as California's ban finally goes into effect | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
California banned the sale of alligator skins decades ago, but for years, lawmakers granted exemptions. Not anymore.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
While I sympathize with concern about alligator populations, I also know that the recovery of the American alligator is a major conservation success story. That success is due in no small part to the proliferation of alligator farms which seem likely to be harmed by this ban.

Tiger’s outing on grounds of Hesperia Zoo prompts excitement, crowd By KATHERINE ROSENBERG / Staff WriterSaturday, October 7, 2006 HESPERI

Well, when I google "Hesparia" this is what I learned.  In 2006 a tiger escaped from a private zoo within the city.  This news story from the following day is...classic.  There are so many ways to go with a piece of journalism like this.  I'll let you all check it out first, but I am curious how many unusual components to this story you can find. Kind of like a conservation "Where's Waldo."
