Conservationists call for urgent ban on deep-sea mining | Biodiversity | The Guardian | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

Motion at Marseille summit wins global support for warning of permanent biodiversity loss and unknown effect on the ecosystem

Lewis Adnan's insight:
Members of the international seabed authority hosted a congress to vote on whether deep-sea mining should be allowed to start. Congress voted with the vast majority saying to withhold mining until enough science has been conducted to anticipate the impact. However, the Pacific nation of Nauru put into place the two-year rule. This means the ISA must have all regulations made by the end of two years or deep-sea mining gets to operate following whatever measures are in place.
Eduardo Garcia's comment, September 24, 2021 3:33 PM
As mentioned in class, the law of the sea pertains to waters extending past each country’s Economic Exclusion Zone deeming it a common heritage to mankind. In this article many nations in the International Seabed Authority (ISA) met in Marseille France to vote in support for a moratorium on deep sea mining to ensure “improved oversight”. Mainly in response to the ambitious goal set by the nation of Nauru to launch deep sea mining within their own EEZ. Which is interesting in that it will force the (ISA) to set a standard and oversight for future deep-sea mining operations. However, a majority of Conservation groups and nations within the (ISA), 81 voted in support of the moratorium, 18 against, and 28 abstained from voting. After reading this article we gather the global consensus is to gather more scientific data before we cause any irreparable and permanent damage to the diverse micro and macro fauna who live in the deep ocean.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
Our Ventura County air management efforts are awesome.  To be sure, we have not prevented all sources of poor air quality, but our region is a clear leader and effective improver of our atmosphere.

The federal efforts to slander the good work of generations of management professionals in Ventura and beyond is a joke.  The misstatements and outright omissions in the U.S. EPA's letter should disturb everyone and speak for themselves. It is disappointing to see environmental quality become even more of a political football and such federal agency efforts to attempt to score political points at the cost of degrading the environment across our California home.

Venezuela’s oil money could keep undermining its economy and democracy | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Venezuela is a textbook case of the "resource curse," with nearly 90 percent of its population living in poverty in the country with the world’s largest oil reserves. After decades of leaders who failed to harness this commodity for peace and prosperity, it is questionable whether a new government can do a better job.

I can see the whole merging of the latter two (both increasingly seen as peopled by strange and/or not-quite-the neighbors-you'd-like-to-have folks), but to taint the honest to goodness monster enthusiast can only mean one thing: the end of the American Enterprise.  No other way to read this.

I have often wondered how the Hermit Kingdom is able to feed its people.  We frequently hear stories of the population reduced to eating grass, smuggling in food stuffs over porous-when-they-want-to-be borders, but harvesting marine fisheries is another possible option.  And there is growing evidence that is indeed one of the venues North Korea is taking.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
The rise of the urban centers over the past 50 years (and by proxy, the continued rise of the coastal zone/coastal urban cores) has primarily translated into a depowering and diminishment of our traditional interior population centers across the United States.  The San Franciscos, Bostons,, and Los Angeleses of our country have benefitted as the Detroits, St. Louises, and Indianapolises have declined.  While there are many factors at work here, the broader empowerment of larger corporate control and the abandonment of Teddy Roosevelt's anti-Trust policies have be a clear long arc driving these trends.  Part of that arc has been the aggregation of larger and larger corporations who care less and less about distant, "irrelevant" local concerns in areas outside of the coastal zone or their urban corporate headquarters.  Again, such large scale forces take years and decades to manifest and carry with them an inertia that may take just as long to reverse (should that be of interest).

PIRatE Lab's insight:
While not a coastal issue per se, this situation is emblematic of many problems in State Government in Louisiana of late.  The notion that you can destroy and undercut an institution and that that is somehow a good thing is usually false.  In this case, one removed from natural resource management, you can more clearly see the impact from previous decisions without the bias that our tradition perspective may engender.  You can see it for what it truly is: ineffective and corrupt government and leadership.
