Australia’s trash tide: what researchers found as they studied 20m pieces of beach rubbish | Australia news | The Guardian

Australia’s trash tide: what researchers found as they studied 20m pieces of beach rubbish | Australia news | The Guardian | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
An analysis of coastal rubbish collected over a decade reveals almost half of it is local litter, but in some areas plastic is washing up from overseas
Lewis Adnan's insight:
Researchers in Australia have made a collaborative effort to count and categorize all trash that washes up on their beaches. They have managed to get a broad sense of where the trash originates from. Knowing where it derives from is important for informing policymakers on how to be effective. They noted that other countries seem to struggle to analyze plastic waste from the water because it is many separate efforts instead of a collaborative goal and system.
Joong Soo Kim's comment, October 20, 2021 12:04 AM
Plastics are everywhere now. I am surprised at the number of people involved in clean-up efforts for a decade. Trashes littered by people account for 48% of all marine debris and I think this shows how we do not really care about the environment. It is good to hear that Australia decides to make all packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. Cleaning up is important and could be helpful, but we need to come up with something that can solve this problem because the amount of trash we make exceeds the amount of trash we clean up.
Brennan LaMont's comment, October 20, 2021 1:42 PM
This would be interesting data to collect. I have heard of some islands in the Pacific, such as Midway, explaining that plastic washes up in-mass from overseas, but did not explain if they tracked how much came from where. Projects like this may be able to show where plastic pollution is coming from to assist in efforts to stop this type of pollution at the source.

Today, The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) has joined the U.S. Plastics Pact, a collaborative, solutions-driven initiative rooted in four ambitious goals intended to drive significant systems change by unifying diverse cross-sector approaches, setting a national strategy, and creating scalable solutions to create a path forward toward a circular economy for plastics in the United States by 2025. The first North American Pact of its kind, the U.S. Pact is a collaboration led by The Recycling Partnership, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

'Zero plastic' organic foods retailer introduces disposable gloves for customers as Covid-19 prevention measure | News

'Zero plastic' organic foods retailer introduces disposable gloves for customers as Covid-19 prevention measure | News | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
A high-end organic foods retailer promoted as “plastic-free shopping” has mandated disposable plastic gloves for customers in its stores in Singapore as a coronavirus prevention measure.

Before entering its stores, customers of Scoop Wholefoods must register using a QR code and then don a pair of single-use plastic gloves. The Australian chain says the gloves are an additional hygiene measure for customers, which use scoops to take dried food from self-service bins in the store.

Individual countries realize the need to increase environmental health as the economy reopens.  A food retailer is helping on a smaller scale by introducing disposable gloves. These will cause less or no harm to the environment if people decide to throw them in the street as opposed to disposing of them properly.

Fight brews over California measure to reduce plastic waste

Fight brews over California measure to reduce plastic waste | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Environmentalists and industry are at odds over a November ballot initiative that would reduce single-use plastics and polystyrene food containers.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This has been way too long a time in coming.  While this step would be progress, we really need a closed loop economy which considers material and energy streams beyond plastic/hydrocarbons.
Gizelle K Monicco's comment, April 19, 2022 12:19 PM
As unfortunate as it is, seeing overflowing trashcans and just pure trash almost everywhere is CA is very common. Living in Los Angeles, by downtown, I can say that I see my daily share of trash almost everywhere I look, and a lot of it is plastic bottles or plastic products. We can definitely reduce that

Ineffective recycling compounds Indonesia’s marine waste problem

Ineffective recycling compounds Indonesia’s marine waste problem | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Indonesia has been in hot water over its contribution to marine waste since 2015, when a report by researcher Jenna Jambeck ranked Indonesia as the world’s second-worst marine plastic polluter for allowing about 1.29 million tons of plastic waste to enter the ocean in 2010 as a result of improper waste management.

The government has been working to prevent waste from ending up in the ocean, including by building the country’s recycling industry.

But the efforts still have a long way to go. Many say the country’s ineffective waste management practices have held the recycling industry back.
