Despite Trump’s Claim, the U.S. Still Needs Some Middle East Oil

President Donald Trump said during an address from the White House Wednesday that the U.S. no longer needs oil from the Middle East, but American refineries still use the kind of oil that region produces.

Thanks to booming shale production, the U.S. reduced shipments from the Persian Gulf to a 30-year low last year. Still, Middle East crude makes up more than 10% of U.S. imports. With new oil production records being set in the Permian Basin, the country’s energy growth engine, America’s thinning reliance on Middle East crude isn’t about to reverse course.

Venezuela’s oil money could keep undermining its economy and democracy

Venezuela’s oil money could keep undermining its economy and democracy | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Venezuela is a textbook case of the "resource curse," with nearly 90 percent of its population living in poverty in the country with the world’s largest oil reserves. After decades of leaders who failed to harness this commodity for peace and prosperity, it is questionable whether a new government can do a better job.

California cities suing oil firms over climate change lose key ruling

California cities suing oil firms over climate change lose key ruling | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
California communities that are suing oil and gas companies over climate change were dealt a setback when a federal judge denied requests by San Francisco and Oakland to move their cases to state court.

Seven cities and counties are seeking to recoup billions of dollars from fossil-fuel-energy producers to compensate for past and future damage incurred because of rising seas. They are seeking to have the issue heard in state court, a venue they see as more favorable to them than the federal courts.

But on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled that the far-reaching scope of the issue puts the matter in federal jurisdiction.

Historic Oil Bust Delivers A Gut Punch To 1 High-Flying Texas County

In the endless boom and bust cycle of the oil business, there has never been anything like 2020. The oil patch is reeling from historic low prices. Futures for West Texas Intermediate crude closed at $25 a barrel on Friday, down from more than $60 a barrel at the beginning of the year.

On a normal day in Andrews County, look in any direction and you'll see, stretching to the horizon, the bobbing horseheads of pump jacks sucking up oil from deep in the earth. But these are anything but normal days.
