As mentioned in class, the law of the sea pertains to waters extending past each country’s Economic Exclusion Zone deeming it a common heritage to mankind. In this article many nations in the International Seabed Authority (ISA) met in Marseille France to vote in support for a moratorium on deep sea mining to ensure “improved oversight”. Mainly in response to the ambitious goal set by the nation of Nauru to launch deep sea mining within their own EEZ. Which is interesting in that it will force the (ISA) to set a standard and oversight for future deep-sea mining operations. However, a majority of Conservation groups and nations within the (ISA), 81 voted in support of the moratorium, 18 against, and 28 abstained from voting. After reading this article we gather the global consensus is to gather more scientific data before we cause any irreparable and permanent damage to the diverse micro and macro fauna who live in the deep ocean.
