Why California is lagging behind the rest of the country when it comes to offshore wind farms

Why California is lagging behind the rest of the country when it comes to offshore wind farms | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Offshore wind power facilities are becoming more common but a California effort faces hurdles.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
While the points made about engineering challenges of deepwater, anti-wind activists, etc. are true, we are leaving out the massive challenge that is permitting in the waters off California.  Many tidal projects off the California coast have all been killed by permitting.  Hence we have tidal projects going in off of Oregon and Baja California, but not here (even though these are designed in the halls and computers of California firms).

Our soon to be shuttered offshore oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel are one potential source of help in this deepwater environment.  To be sure, these are enough of a platform, but they could be parts/nodes of a wider array of ocean-based energy production.

PUC calls for revisions in San Onofre shutdown cost settlement

PUC calls for revisions in San Onofre shutdown cost settlement | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
An agreement on paying for the closure of the San Onofre nuclear power plant near San Clemente needs to be more favorable to consumers, state regulators said Friday.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

When we calculate the direct costs (leaving aside the issues related to waste internment and multi-millenium storage of highly radioactive substances) of nuclear power, decommissioning must be in the equation.  I have found such costs rarely are accounted for.  When they are the estimates are typically rarely close to the actual amounts we have seen (e.g. >$4 billion for this SONGS example).
