How oil spills from wartime sea battles nearly wiped out famous Welsh guillemots

Population declined by 95% in the years around World War II, according to a new study.

Via Grant W. Graves
Casey Lysdale's insight:
The aim of this PhD student was to understand the population dynamics of just 3,500 individual guillemonts on Skomer. Sunk battleships during WWII released oil and negatively impacted guillemots populations. A change in fishing activity or climate change could be contributors to the rebounding population.

Retreating from the sea on the East Coast.  This is a nice comparison to what we are trying (e.g. in Ventura) and hoping to try (e.g. Ormond Beach and Goleta) here in California.

What Happens When There's Poop in the Water

What Happens When There's Poop in the Water | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Raw sewage flows into many of Rio’s Olympic venues every day. As the prospect of a full clean-up before the Games dims, the world is left wondering, who will get sick, and how?
PIRatE Lab's insight:
It has almost become routine.  The Olympics swing around every other year and the scrutiny spins up centered on the pledged development/commitments claimed.  Right now we are hot and heavy into the "how ill will you get when you coming into contact with the (literally) crappy Brazilian ocean waters" and the "will you spread the brain-tweaking virus to your home country if you come" phase of things.  But both beg the questions...

As for the silliness surrounding Zika, see this most recent revelation:

Indonesia volcano erupts again; kills at least 14

MOUNT SINABUNG, Indonesia (AP) â€" An Indonesian volcano that has been rumbling for months unleased a major eruption Saturday, killing 14 people just a day after authorities allowed thousands of villagers who had been evacuated to return to its slopes, saying that activity was decreasing, officials said. Among the dead on Mount Sinabung were a local television journalist and four high-school students and their teacher who were visiting the mountain to see the eruptions up close, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. On Friday, authorities allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a five-kilometer (three-mile) danger zone to return home after volcanic activity decreased. "The death toll is likely to rise as many people are reported still missing and the darkness hampered our rescue efforts," said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the operation to retrieve the charred corpses some 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the volcano's peak.
