Climate Change Is Pushing These Migratory Birds to the Brink

Climate Change Is Pushing These Migratory Birds to the Brink | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Afro-Siberian red knots migrate from the Arctic to winter in Africa, where they recover from the arduous journey. But warming in Siberia is causing physical changes in the birds that hinder their ability to feed, and scientists fear the subspecies is headed for extinction.
Hunter Santana's insight:
This article discusses the effects of rising global temperatures has on migratory birds. It focuses on the Afro-Siberian Red Knot bird that migrate between the Arctic and Africa.

Sea levels could rise by two metres if the planet warms by 5°C | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

A warming world is bad news for Earth’s ice sheets, but a new study suggests the outlook could be even worse for coastal cities around the world.

Via NERC press office
Casey Lysdale's insight:
Change of five-degree celsius is linked to a two-meter rise in sea level. These impacts are not uniform along coastlines. The rising sea would displace millions and cost billions.

Hurricane Matthew-Humanitarian Mapping | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

"The Humanitarian OpenSteetMap Team (HOT) has activated to provide geographic base data in areas affected by Hurricane Matthew. Category 4 Hurricane Matthew continues to strengthen and is advancing on Haiti and the Bahamas. Hurricane Matthew is expected to cause 'catastrophic' damage including extreme flooding and landslides potentially affecting millions in Haiti, Jamaica, and Bahamas. To start we are mapping coastal communities in the storm path."

The strengthening El Niño in the Pacific Ocean has the potential to become one of the most powerful on record, as warming ocean waters surge toward the Americas, setting up a pattern that could bring once-in-a-generation storms this winter to drought-parched California. PIRatE Lab's insight:

Building off of the idea of a wind map of the United States by Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viegas, Cameron Beccario made one for Earth, based on data from the Global Forecast System.

This is a great tool for introducing global near-surface wind (and to a certain extent surface water phenomenon such as waves/wave height).  Beautiful illustration!

New report says Nitrous Oxide from farming accelerating Climate Change

New report says Nitrous Oxide from farming accelerating Climate Change | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Climate Change

A new study, published in the scientific journal Nature, suggests a lesser-known greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide, is being emitted into the atmosphere at an increasing rate.

Natasha Booth's insight:
This video summarizes how farms are using nitrous oxide, which is another greenhouse gas that is rarely talked about, is having a bigger effect on climate change than we originally thought.
Victor Martinez's comment, March 26, 2021 4:43 PM
It always blows my mind how many things can contribute to climate change. For example farms using nitrous oxide which is a green house gas is a contributor to this problem.
Ray Daugherty's curator insight, March 28, 2022 11:27 PM

This video is showing that this specific farming technique is accelerating climate change. This should put all farmers on high alert and force them to find another way of farming that won't accelerate climate change or even better, help slow down climate change.

Drought relief, at last? New signs point to strengthening El Niño

Drought relief, at last? New signs point to strengthening El Niño | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

Some experts have believed that the first signs of California’s drought easing could emerge thousands of miles away in the Pacific Ocean near the equator.

That’s where the famously fickle weather condition known as El Niño forms. Predicting one can be difficult. But when the effects of a very strong El Niño arrive in California, heavy — sometimes epic — rains often follow.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

We are way too far out to make confidential statements about a possible El Nino this coming year...but it would be nice.
