California governor gently confronts Trump on climate

California governor gently confronts Trump on climate | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
California Gov. Gavin Newsom had President Donald Trump one-on-one on live TV Monday, a perfect opportunity to spar with Democrats’ public enemy No. 1 just 50 days before the election.

But Newsom dropped the fiery tone he has employed in recent weeks about climate change and its role in five of the largest fires California has ever seen. Instead, he engaged the president in a respectful conversation that included both men hailing their good relationship.

In a strikingly ignorant tweet, Trump gets almost everything about California wildfires wrong

Trump's tweet about California fires shows he doesn't understand anything about the climate or water.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The amount of blatantly ignorant and actively deceptive information in the face of unfolding natural disasters and management challenges is unprecedented (in the United States) in the modern era.

These Louisiana politicians are demanding flood aid, but voted against Sandy relief | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
These Louisiana politicians are demanding emergency aid for their constituents, but voted against Superstorm Sandy relief in 2014.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is a tough one.  Do you penalize the people of Louisiana for myopic vision and anti-science views?  I suspect the initial answer of many is "no."  But how does that square with the electorate voting in these foolish and hyper partisans who deny the very threats to their communities in the first place?

The best answer would be to elect in folks who can actually process facts and science honestly and accurately BEFORE making their policy decision or determination on a given piece of legislation.  The challenge of course is that the folks in Louisiana are hurting now and need help before the next election cycle.

A tech billionaire’s PowerPoint brought the Trillion Trees climate plan to the president, a textbook case of ad hoc policymaking in the Trump era.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Policy as stream of consciousness and a free from reality philosophy.

It is likely no funding will ever be committed, few trees will be in fact planted (or protected post-planting ceremony), and few if any will survive to maturity.

This is policy by a three year old.

Jury rules Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller causes cancer, awards man $289 million

A jury’s $289 million award to a former school groundskeeper who said Monsanto’s Roundup left him dying of cancer will bolster thousands of pending cases and open the door for countless people who blame their suffering on the weed killer, the man’s lawyers said.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The ecotoxicology and associated policy of human-created compounds is something of a joke here in the United States.  The burden of proof in large measure lies with the folks making the claim that a particular substance is dangerous, NOT with the creator of the substance to show it is harmless or minimally negative given the potential benefits.

This is coming to a head this week in the media thanks to the just-announced settlement of a California jury to award a former grounds keeper an insanely huge settlement for (purportedly) inducing cancer after significant exposure to Round-Up (glyphosate).
