San Jose flood: City knew about flood risk, discussed evacuations

San Jose flood: City knew about flood risk, discussed evacuations | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
New records and details show that San Jose officials were aware of the risks and prepared extensively for flooding, yet held off alerting residents as waters rose.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Again...this pattern emerges with the facts/science correctly indicating potential/possible outcomes, but our political institutions.
Brian Chew's comment, March 8, 2017 10:56 AM
I am greatly worried by this news, as this shows the indecisiveness of San Jose's political leaders. Due to their indecisiveness, mistakes, lack of communication and their failure to properly approximate how quickly San Jose would get flooded, it caused many people to get evacuated only when San Jose was badly flooded, causing great inconvenience for everyone there and posing a threat to the residents. Furthermore, because of the lateness of the alert that the residents of San Jose received, a lot of money was lost due to damages caused by the flood, due to the lack of preparation. I hope that something similar would not happen again, not only in San Jose, but around the world. Fortunately, there were no deaths due to the flood this time, however, one could not always say everyone would be so lucky all the time. Hence, we should take more precautions and be prepared for something like this to happen again. Leaders should also learn to be more decisive, to take more precautions, and to be more accountable to the public.
PIRatE Lab's comment, March 8, 2017 1:00 PM
Brian: I agree. the value in accurate (or at least more accurate) estimates of risk and models predicting events like flooding is just what you articulated. We can make better decisions when we both 1) have as much data as we can possible pull together, 2) have the wisdom to have contingency plans should a problem arise, and 3) have strong leadership that have evaluate the current situation in respond accordingly. These three things are not always found where we want them to be found these days. But continuing this pattern will only lead to greater problems in the future.

Commercial Dungeness crab season under way in the Bay Area

Commercial Dungeness crab season under way in the Bay Area | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The shellfish should arrive in restaurants as early as Wednesday and in fish markets later this week, meaning Bay Area families can return to the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving with platters of freshly steamed and cracked Dungeness crab. The best retail prices are expected to be $5.99 to $6.99 per pound, according to Mike Lucas, president of North Coast Fisheries, a shellfish processor and distributor in Santa Rosa. On Wednesday, the two Woodhouse locations will return to offering their “Dungeness Madness” special: a whole steamed crab with potatoes, greens and garlic bread for $20 (the price will likely rise over the weekend). After last year’s season was delayed by months because of a toxic algal bloom, the start of this year’s brought a sense of relief to those in the fishing industry. Crab boats began dropping their pots in the ocean Monday and were allowed to start pulling them up at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. At Sun Fat Seafood, a market in the Mission District, employee Hoa Kuu said he expects to have local crab in the store this weekend. There is one limit on the fishery, though, as a 60-mile stretch of the coast between Point Reyes and the Mendocino-Sonoma county line is not yet open because of sporadic domoic acid showing up in tests conducted by the California Department of Public Health.

Oyster farm cleanup puts Drakes Estero on way to marine wilderness

Oyster farm cleanup puts Drakes Estero on way to marine wilderness | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The once-bustling oyster farm and sales shack at the end of the dirt road had the look of sudden abandonment.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

After more than a decade of legal fights and negotiations, Drake's Estero is finally going oyster-free.  While I normally should be happy about such a decision (eliminating non-natives that are a constant source of other invasive species, etc.), I can't help feeling that we've lost something here.  The cows are allowed on the surrounding hillsides, even though they impact the watersheds flowing into the bay, roads cling to the edges of the shoreline, etc., etc.  This doesn't ring of capital "w" Wilderness to me.  Something here instead smacks of Marin County and of "wouldn't it be nice if..." policies.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
Wow...the sage at Point Reyes National Seashore continues. There is so much here that is not being said:

1) the activists that previously defeated efforts to cull the population that has included the numbers now that are beyond the carrying capacity of the current territory.
2) activists who think they know best how to respond to wildlife
3) people who have multiple agendas, but hide behind charismatic megafauna

The wildfires that ripped through Northern California this month destroyed at least 8,400 homes and buildings, according to state officials. The scope and scale of damage is among some of the worst from wildfires in state history. The bulk of the destruction can be found in Santa Rosa, where the Tubbs fire ripped through major residential areas on Oct. 8 and 9.Satellite image analysis by The Times combined with data collected by Cal Fire and Sonoma County shows the Tubbs fire destroyed or damaged at least 5,500 structures alone.
