Local fishers oppose $2.7 billion deal opening Madagascar to Chinese fishing | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Life on the coast of Madagascar is increasingly precarious. In recent decades, the overexploitation of marine life has made it difficult for hundreds of thousands of small-scale fishers to make a living. So it’s no surprise that they are vocally opposing a new agreement to bring hundreds of additional Chinese vessels into their waters. Two […]

Arctic warming hotspot in the northern Barents Sea linked to declining sea-ice import

Arctic warming hotspot in the northern Barents Sea linked to declining sea-ice import | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The northern Barents Sea has warmed rapidly in recent decades. Hydrographic observations suggest increases in ocean temperature—particularly after the mid-2000s—can be linked to reduced sea-ice import, freshwater loss, weakened stratification and increased upward heat fluxes from the deep Atlantic layer.

For now, at least, life is good again for Filipino fisherman who had been locked out by China. Duterte's dealmaking has given them access to disputed waters.

Former Kiribati president eyes massive infrastructure projects to save his island nation

Former Kiribati president eyes massive infrastructure projects to save his island nation | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The low-lying Pacific island nation of Kiribati has become a poster child for the threats posed by sea level rise. Now its former president, Anote Tong, is trying to raise money to save it.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
It boggles the mind why Conservation International and other large marine conservation organizations continue to see Kiribati's leadership and an entity that is reliable.  Their absolute farce of their "Marine Protected Area" that was nothing but a massive paper park is well known (I've posted about this extensively before).  I simply can't see how we can trust such dishonest leadership on a subject so important and so needed.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
This very dangerous game of chicken is continuing to grow.  As with so many UN/international agreements that can simply be ignored, it is unclear if this ruling will have the effect of tamping down tensions in the South China Sea or simply be a road bump.

Chagos islanders cannot return home, says Supreme Court

Chagos islanders cannot return home, says Supreme Court | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Former residents of the Chagos Islands who were forcibly removed from their homeland more than 40 years ago have lost their legal challenge to return.
Families left the Indian Ocean islands in the 1960s and 70s to make way for a US Air Force base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the group of islands.
An Immigration Order preventing anyone from going back was issued in 1971.
The Supreme Court - UK's highest court - upheld a 2008 House of Lords ruling that the exiles could not return.
Olivier Bancoult, the Chagossian leader who has been fighting in the courts on behalf of the islanders, had argued that decision should be set aside.
