5 Unusual New Orleans Museums You Should Visit

5 Unusual New Orleans Museums You Should Visit | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Discover one-of-a-kind collections across the Crescent City
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Some great places to see on your next visit to New Orleans.  I would also add in here the Insectarium and (my favorite) the Pharmacy Museum. Of course the Historic New Orleans Collection is a must.

I would also add in the Cabildo on Jackson Square.

And while it is not much of a museum per se, I would also encourage folks to go check outage Levee outdoor "Museum" which is more of an open air exhibit explaining how the Levees along London Avenue Canal breached during Hurricane Katrina (it is free and open 24 hours).

Avoid most of the other bigger, promoted spaces (like the Aquarium of the Americas, WWII Museum, etc.).  They are fine, but won't give you as good a picture of the diverse goings on in this neck of the woods as these listed spots.

We just hit the Whitney for the first time last month.  It was awesome!

The big glaring absence here is a formal interpretation/museum of the Levee Failures that flooded the City of New Orleans in 2005.  Where are you National Park Service?!?  This is part of our national story too, you know.

Fish or foul: Was the 17th Street Canal seepage a red herring or the canary in the coal mine? | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This failed flood protection element is a key stop on our annual class trips to New Orleans and is one of a handful of what I would now call "classic" illustrations of failed flood protection systems/criminal negligence of our governing/responsible agencies.

Two Crimes 'American Crime Story' Should Cover

The producers of "American Crime Story" recently
PIRatE Lab's insight:
How strange it is that some folks CANNOT think of a crime in association with Hurricane Katrina.  They weren't paying attention.

I'm not a big fan of the crime story/tragedy-as-fodder for TV plot lines.  But if you have to do a crime story, I'm all for treating the Army Corps of Engineers' absolute negligence and immoral approach to engineering as a "crime story."

Tulane University - Katrina@10 Home

Tulane University - Katrina@10 Home | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

The KATRINA@10 Conference will provide an overview of the impacts and consequences of Hurricane Katrina on the affected area and populations. It will be held on Thursday Aug 27, 2015, from 8:30 am until 6:30 PM at the Diboll Auditorium and Gallery, located on the ground floor of Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, 1440 Canal Street, New Orleans.

The conference capitalizes on two sets of research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH-funded team lead the "Health and Demographic Disparities in Recovery from Hurricane Katrina" Program. This team will present in the morning session an overview of key results from an integrated set of studies that include three Katrina cohorts and two analyses of data that are representative of the affected area at the time Katrina occurred. Plans for future work will also be presented. The NSF-funded team lead the "Diversity and Disease in a Post-Trauma Urban Landscape" Study. This team will present in the afternoon session an overview of key results from an integrated set of studies examining trade-offs between ecological and socioeconomic recovery, with the intent to improve understanding of how disease risk reflects ecological changes brought on by response efforts and reconstruction following catastrophic events.

Both the morning and afternoon sessions will feature a Reaction Panel of nationally-acclaimed disaster experts who will lead a discussion of the policy implications of the findings.

There will be about 100 seats open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

This mayor, who sought personal profit and position even in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, is finally sentenced.  This sorry political leader would use any tools at his disposal (divisive rhetoric, payola, etc.) to improve he and his children's position, the city and the public be damned.
