CDFW Gray Wolf Update

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a native species that was likely extirpated from California in the 1920s. Wolves are now returning to California on their own by dispersal of individuals from source populations in other states. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has not reintroduced gray wolves to the state.

The CDFW is working to monitor this recovering endangered species protected under the California Endangered Species Acts. Wolves pose little human safety risk. The public reporting of potential wolf sightings in California are investigated, and valued as a monitoring tool.

Contractors Dynamite Mountains, Bulldoze Desert In Race To Build Trump's Border Wall

In the Coronado National Memorial — where conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado entered what is now Arizona — contractors are pulverizing the wilderness in a rush to put up as many miles of border wall as possible before the Trump administration vacates Washington. They're dynamiting mountainsides and bulldozing pristine desert for a barrier the incoming Biden administration is expected to cancel.

"Wow! This is almost like busy work they're doing," exclaims biologist Myles Traphagen as he drives his truck up to the construction staging area and beholds the destruction for the first time. He specializes on the Arizona borderlands for the Wildlands Network.

"They're cutting roads into a place where no vehicle could go, not a four-wheeler," he says. "But now they're cutting into the mountain to create access to build a wall."

Experts say 'extinction is around the corner' for right whales | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
There have been a record 18 deaths and zero births of the species over the past year.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The old term "right whale" was earned as these organisms were slow and moved mostly close to the coastline.  Ironic that the word actually now means they were the "right" type of what to be driven extinct!

Cracking down on poaching with 3D-printed fake turtle eggs | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
One of the world’s most endangered species, the sea turtle, is under threat from human encroachment and poaching. But a conservation biologist has developed a strategy that could help save them. By placing 3D-printed eggs with GPS trackers in nesting grounds, poachers who scoop up decoys unwittingly provide information for conservationists and law enforcement. John Yang reports.

At Interior, we’re ready to bring the Endangered Species Act up to date

At Interior, we’re ready to bring the Endangered Species Act up to date | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
We have proposed changes to achieve the greatest good in the longest term.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The biggest problem with the ESA is the intentional defunding of assessments and biological recovery plans...part of the motivation to give wider protection to "only" threatened species.  To get to "threatened" is a major red alter.  The author here hopes to convince you that this is some very preliminary stage of concern for species.  The reality is that we need to act much more swiftly and decisively if we are to conserve a decent portion of our remaining biological heritage.  These comments and arguments ring as hollow when coming from the administrators who seek increasing take of everything from wolves to sage grouse.  The policies emanating from the Interior Department these days are all too often devoid of scientific basis and rely on anecdotal or cherry-picked data rather than objective interrogation.

While we always need to be wary of ad hominem attacks, in this case Mr. Bernhardts lobbying history and association with poor-crafted attempts to undermine the ESA are relevant to understanding where these alterations to the ESA may be coming from: https://www.cnn.com/2017/07/24/politics/david-bernhardt-confirmed-deputy-secretary-interior-department/index.html
