Taxpayers could foot the bill when coastal officials are accused of wrongdoing

"...we can thank three former and two current members of the California Coastal Commission. They were found guilty recently of violating rules regarding private meetings with individuals who have business before the all-powerful commission, which votes to approve or reject coastal development and land use applications."
tanner's insight:
The organization Spotlight on Coastal Corruption is responsible for this lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission. They recognize that there is no good reason for "private meetings" and that transparency in the operation of the commission is the only way to ensure equitable practices.

Fashion mogul turned producer Sidney Kimmel is seeking $81.5 million for the former Malibu home of Johnny Carson.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
$81.5 million dollars for a Malibu bluff-top house is one of the reasons folks worry about the powerful excluding the common folk from the coastal zone.  Without the coastal act this would all be a done deal and the public would rarely if ever be able to get to our beloved coast.

The coastal commission has levied about $2 million in fines and demanded the construction of stairways to give the public access to their beaches
PIRatE Lab's insight:
A nine-year delay...after no progress since 1979...this is the story of the powerful.  Again, if this type of behavior that was in clear violation of state law and planning ordinances was in a poor neighborhood or an area with disenfranchised folks, we would likely not be talking about nor "debating" additional delaying tactics four decades later.
