Kenya floods kills dozens, sweep through informal settlements - The | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The Red Cross reported at least 38 dead and more than 11,000 displaced after weeks of heavy rains swamped the country and caused rivers to burst their banks.
Laura Casas's comment, April 26, 6:10 PM
It is extremely sad to read about what it happening. It must be disorienting to be going from a drought to massive deadly floods after only a year. It is also shocking to learn that their government is doing nothing to help.

Its horrible to read about how there has been so much destruction due to the floods with no no help from a government.

The epic floods receded, but the misery remains in California farm towns

The epic floods receded, but the misery remains in California farm towns | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
During the epic rains of 2023, atmospheric rivers pounded areas rich and poor in California with equal ferocity. But poor rural communities bore the brunt of the damage.
Isabella Jackson's insight:
This was a natural disaster that hit close to home for me and there were families that I knew that were impacted by the flooding that occurred in Merced county. Much of the impacts of the floods were caused by poor infrastructure that if it had been updated, the flooding wouldn't have been as severe as it was. Some families were able to repair the damages that the flooding caused to their homes but many were not and were needing donations of food and clothing in the weeks following the flooding.
Alex Gilman's comment, January 26, 8:14 PM
Thought this was very interesting as this is happening so close to home and so out of no where, As we would think. But scary to think that anything like this could happen anywhere anytime, given the right circumstances. Very cool article to go through and the poor lives that got effected by this disaster.

Mudslides, drowned highways, upended homes: Scenes from Southern California's atmospheric river | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The atmospheric river parked over Southern California has caused devastating debris flows in posh neighborhoods in the region's canyons and hillsides.
Alex Gilman's insight:
This is pretty scary to learn as I am a person who lives near hills and mountains and ever since these storms, I have noticed small landslides and other flooding damages, As time goes on these will be more frequent.

Floods Engulf Brisbane and Kill 9 in Northeastern Australia - The New York Times

Floods Engulf Brisbane and Kill 9 in Northeastern Australia - The New York Times | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Days of downpours have pummeled Queensland and New South Wales, with the authorities describing the wild weather as “waves of water just coming down.”
AlexisPalomares's insight:
the Brisbane River in Australia couldn't handle such immense rainfall and resulted in a flashflood that killed 9 people. Thousands of people in Northern Australia were forced to evacuate.
Holly Jones's comment, March 1, 2022 12:07 PM
The Australian floods seem very intense, there is lots of coverage on them. Like Dr A highlighted in lecture, it is important to be aware of the dangers of flash floods and flooding in general. It happens very fast, and they can be powerful enough to move boulders and trees within minutes.
