Study links cold water shock to catastrophic coral collapse in the Eastern Pacific

Study links cold water shock to catastrophic coral collapse in the Eastern Pacific | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Marine heatwaves brought about by climate change are known to be responsible for mass mortality on some of the planet's most iconic coral reef systems.
David Jenson's insight:
The article discusses research that suggests a link between cold water temperatures and catastrophic coral collapses. The study found that coral reefs are more susceptible to disease and death when the water temperature drops suddenly and significantly, which can happen due to a number of factors, including the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and human activities such as global warming and ocean acidification. The research team conducted experiments on coral reefs in the Caribbean and found that sudden drops in temperature made the coral more susceptible to disease, leading to a significant decline in coral cover. The findings of this study suggest that efforts to protect coral reefs should include measures to prevent and mitigate the impacts of sudden drops in water temperature.

Coastal erosion in the Arctic intensifies global warming: Sea level rise in the past led to the release of greenhouse gases from permafrost

Coastal erosion in the Arctic intensifies global warming: Sea level rise in the past led to the release of greenhouse gases from permafrost | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The loss of arctic permafrost deposits by coastal erosion could amplify climate warming via the greenhouse effect. A study using sediment samples from the Sea of Okhotsk on the eastern coast of Russia revealed that the loss of Arctic permafrost at the end of the last glacial period led to repeated sudden increases in the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere.
Cassandra Rogers's insight:
Researchers have found a positive feedback loop between rapid sea level rise and the release of large quantities of carbon dioxide that was previously stored in arctic permafrost. This process presents a new challenge to scientist in how they identify what sources of atmospheric carbon to address for climate change.
