The rules governing pitkala middlemen who auction farmers’ produce are set to be overhauled after tensions boiled over last month.
The government plans on contracting these middlemen, previously self-employed, to provide the auctioning service for farmers twice a week.

Investment in SMALL and Future FARMRS: Essential to Healthy FOOD and Healthy RURAL Communities | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

As the first African-American woman elected to Congress from North Carolina, I served for 10 years in positions on the House Agriculture Committee and as the ranking member of the Operations Oversight, Nutrition, and Forestry Subcommittees. 'UN Report Says Small-Scale Organic Farming Only Way To Feed The World'

'UN Report Says Small-Scale Organic Farming Only Way To Feed The World' | CIHEAM Press Review | Scoop.it

“Wake up before it’s too late.” Small farms are the only way to feed the world. “The time is now to switch back to our natural farming roots.” These are dire warnings from the U.N. in a 2015 report. Monocrops and GMOs are not the only answer and are not enough to feed the world. There must also be a supplemental food source to feed the planet. That food source is small farms. We have to grow our own food. This is something that farmers, ranchers, and homesteaders have known since the beginning of modern agriculture.

The lack of enough funding from the Government, recovery from the LRA war and harsh weather patterns aside, other serious constraints include: lack of access to relevant and timely agricultural information; the need for more skills empowerment initiatives such as agribusiness and entrepreneurial skills; and poor attitudes and mindsets that are dictated by patriarchal beliefs which strongly influence power dynamics in many settings including resource control and ownership, continue to hinder progress in the agricultural sector in this part of the country.
