Para sorpresa de los expertos, el bismuto es superconductor con una temperatura crítica de 0,53 mK a presión ambiente. Siendo un semimetal su superconductividad no se puede explicar con la teoría de Bardeen, Cooper y Schrieffer (BCS). La aproximación adiabática usada en esta teoría no es aplicable al bismuto. Hay extensiones no adiabáticas, pero no aplican bien a los cristales 3D de bismuto. Una gran oportunidad para los físicos teóricos más intrépidos.
