Biochemist Professor Philip Hogg, from Sydney Australia, has developed a molecule that shuts off a cancer cells’ energy production, which stops the cancer cells dividing and kills them. It only targets cancer cells, leaving healthy cells alone.
A clinical trial in Britain found 40% of patients had stable disease while on the drug. A second generation molecule is now being tested on 22 patients in Sydney and Melbourne.
Professor Hogg hasn’t stopped his research he’s still refining the molecule he’s developed.
“Often the ones that are of greatest benefit are the third or fourth generation molecules because you’ve learnt how to make it better,” he says.
If it works he has plans turn the treatment from an infusion into a pill.
